Hello.

i own a Leica M4.

I recently noticed that after developing the films, only in the first frame the image comes out half exposed.
Can anyone advise me what the problem could be?
I would like to point out that during the last few reels I roll the film at the end so that the beginning of the film remains protruding so as not to open the container for development.
Maybe there is a connection between the things.

thank's in advance.

What does the part of the frame look like which does not contain an image? Is the negative black or clear?

If it's black, you should check the instructions on how to load the M4 with film.

I could be wrong but are you sure it has nothing to do with your loading routine? For me it sounds just like half of your frame has been already exposed to light, probably when loading. Can you post a photo of first frame (with perforations), so we can be more pro in trying to guess where the problem lies.

maybe you’re right that winding film  back to canister can be a source of a problem, I know the prices of film, but if you’re rolling your own it may be a good idea to invest in reloadable cassettes or if you want to impress everyone here a set of IXMOO I think they should work with m4

Sorry but I usually cut out the bad frame and throw it away.

Regarding loading the film, I connect the beginning of the film inside the winding drum as indicated in the drawing on the bottom cover of the camera

And then, advance how many times?

I advance the film until it shows 0 to prepare the first shot and then step to 1, Usually there was no problem until recently I saw that the problem was discovered on the last 4 films.

That's perfectly alright if you advance two frames. Otherwise, you run the risk that your first frame comes to lie on part of the header which sticks out of the cartridge. Which could be the case here.

This way, you will waste one frame.

I just drop the roll into the camera exactly as indicated on the camera's bottom and close the bottom plate. Then I advance one frame. Then I take the slack out of the roll by turning the rewind crank/knob in the direction indicated by the little arrow as far as it will go without undue force. When I now fire the shutter and advance to the next frame, the frame counter will be at zero and the camera is ready to take the first shot.

This method works reliably with the quick-load system of the M4 and later models and will yield 38 frames from a regular 135-36 roll every time, with frames numbered 0 to 37 on the frame counter. Just make sure the shutter is fully cocked before you start the procedure. Sometimes it will be cocked only half-way when you've hit the end of the previous roll.

Yes, but you know what you're doing. For someone having problems related to the first frame on a roll it might be better to strictly keep to the printed manual.
