HI,

I am looking to buy a new digital camera, and the D3 and V1 are grabbing my attention, i take alot of landscape/cityscape photographs. i am also going traveling soon, so the D3 seems the closest to a dSLR without the bulk!? Though at the same time i dont want to loose alot of quality because of wanting something smaller.

If anyone could give any information that may help me, it would be much appreciated,

Thanks alot,

ZACH NOLAN

I have a digilux 3 and it's bulky! I would accept that both the camera's are very good and look especially at what is "handy" for you. D3 is nice and big, V1 is smaller and VERY handy.

Now ... a lot later ... I think I would have gone for the V1.

Given the comparision you make to DSLR, I suppose you refer to the Digilux3 : 4/3 format, decent zoom, bulky, costly... I never tried it, but sincerely I wouldn't go for it... the V-Lux costs less, is very portable and has a really fantastic zoom; only limitation: no real Wide Angle, but to reach the tele capability of V-Lux, you'd have to buy another lens for the Digilux 3.

Sorry everyone, im obviously gettin muddled myself, i am talkin about the D-lux3 and V-lux 1, WHen i wrote d3 and v1, i was refering to these,

Cheers,

So,

The d-lux3 is tiny compared to the V-lux. The v-lux is much more like a dslr than the d-lux. If you want to read reviews of the cameras go to dpreview and look at the Panasonic LX2 and the Panasonic FZ50. Both are good cameras but they are so different it is hard to compare them. The v-lux 1 is great for travel and especially if you like a long zoom. However it starts at 36mm and goes to more than 400mm. The d-lux starts at 28mm and has a much smaller zoom range. If you like shooting wide angle the d-lux3 is a really fun camera to use.

D-Lux3 or the V-Lux1... having lived with the D-Lux3 for a close to a year... if i had to do over again i'd spend the extra and get the V-Lux1... quibbles aside the D-Lux3 was my first digital camera... i still miss the view finder... (ie: my old canon rangerfinder ) that fact alone makes the way i mate with setting up and taking pictures using the 2.8" display at arms length is a real a bore. (you hope for the best) using the aspect ratio of 16:9 and cropping pics later in Photoshop does helps. granted the digital noise won't change with the V-lux1... you do get a better lens... but you loose much of point and shoot... (not a loss i'd say) you get a bulker camera to haul around. i've taken a some good pictures with the D-Lux3... but lost a few do to using crappy settings and the learning curve of going digital... i know the same learning curve would happen with the V-Lux1. now, in hindsight i think i'd mate better with the V-Lux1 and it would feel more like a real camera... then again, nothing is perfect...

I went through this same dilema 6 months ago and, like you, I came to this forum for input as to whether I should change from film at all, then which model to look at! I went for the V-Lux1 and have been delighted with it. The lens is super and it carries as much automation or manual setting as one chooses to use. In Auto mode (beginners mode) for instance it will set everything for you automatically so you can start simply using it as a point and shoot then work up from there....and there is an impressive lot to explore as one becomes more confident. Once familiar with the impressive functions it has huge potential. I went to the dealer and examined both models. It took a couple of hours for me to choose and negotiate a trade in for my Leica film camera but I am convinced that I made the right choice - for me anyway.

Good luck

Richard

I too was unable to make my mind up about whether the D-Lux 3 or V-Lux 1 would best suit my needs. Having deliberated for some considerable time, I eventually (and extravagantly!) bought both and find that they are quite complimentary. I use the D-Lux 3 for 'snatched' photographs and find it easy to carry in my pocket, especially in the magnificent Leica leather tailored case I have purchased. Expensive, but SO worth every penny. I tend to use the V-Lux 1 for more formal tripod mounted photography but DO miss the threaded shutter release of my film SLRs. I'm now saving hard for a D-Lux 4 as I prefer, wherever possible, to use hot shoe mounted flash equipment, rather than the built in flash guns, but PLEASE don't tell my wife!

I don't really consider myself suitably qualified to make a decision apropos of which is the 'best', but find the V-Lux 1 easier to use and more comfortable in the hand.

I just bought a v-lux 1 after procastinating for ages over it, the final price drop did it for me £299! I use it when i want to take one camera out and shoot far, mostly though I use my dlux2, and take out my proper slr with 2 different lenses when i want a choice..

Results from vlux1 are good, still not got as good results as my nikon but havent shot enough yet..

Short answer if you want a pocket camera to take out every day dlux3 if you want to take a brick out go vlux1

I have a VLux1 and am very happy with it. But, I need a smaller camera to fit into a brief case or a coat pocket. So, I have ordered the DLux4 ! I think that with these 2 camera, I can have it all. And Leica has extended the rebate thru the end of January here in the USA. Hey, that's $150 off the beat price you can find from an authorized dealer. Word of warning , there are many dealers on the Internet who claim to be an authorized dealer. Call Leica customer services & find out if they are prior to making a purchase. It will save you lots of heartburn in the end.

The results from the tiny D-Lux 4 are staggering when you think what we were achieving only a year or two ago. The image quality is first class and it fits in a pocket.

I would consider the Lumix G1 with double lens kit as well... 28 to 400mm with two fantastic lenses, at the price of the V-Lux more or less.

Everything with stunning quality and a small size when compared to both the D-Lux3 and V-Lux1.

my 2cents

I think you'll find the VL1 smaller than the G1, if you're carrying around both kit lenses for the G1. I think the G1 is a bit smaller (and slightly lighter) with the basic kit lens, but then you don't have much telephoto range. No doubt, the G1's sensor is better.
