I have just received my barely used M10. With previous cameras I have always purchased and applied one of the clear glass screen protectors that are available. Is this a good idea or unnecessary in light of the Gorilla Glass? Any downside?

Depends on your useage. If you handle carefully and generally protect your camera from knocks, that will protect your screen as well as the body and lens. Make sure the inside of any camera bag has no scratchy bits.

Edit: I have had my M10 from release date and use it extensively. I see no wear signs on the screen.

I put one of the glass protectors on all my M10 and M11 cameras other than the M11M which is sapphire glass.

I have my camera around my hip a lot and the screen is exposed to belts / zippers / etc while I walk so I'm bound to scratch it sometime. That said I've never seen a mark on my screen protectors so it's probably fine without 😁

I've seen no downside, at least none that I've noticed in practical use. Perhaps side-by-side comparisons would show some differences but nothing of major concern.

I have the original Leica screen protector on my Q2 and the SL2 and see no reason to not have them to protect the screen.
A non glare protector may be better but not sure if available and they make the screen a bit duller.
