Stefan @S/W(left in the picture) bought one of the newly interpreted lenses, just like me. We met in the Leica store at the start of our photo walk and Stefan saw the lens on my camera and tried it on his SL3. He was so excited that he immediately bought the last non-reserved lens. The gentleman (on the right in the picture) is the deputy store manager

Here is a picture from the M-A (Type 127) with the new Summilux and Kodak Tmax 100

It looked incredibly good with film! Was this shot wide open?

...One concern: at close distances and wide open, it’s not as sharp as I’d like......Curious to hear others’ thoughts—how do you find this lens?...

I don't own a copy (sadly) but I did have a play with one the other day and fired-off a couple of frames at min. focus and max. aperture. I can't say that I was disappointed with the image sharpness. Here's a 100% crop. Plane of focus was eyes but easier to judge sharpness by looking at the eyebrows. Do the double/triple/click thing to see it full-size;

Just uploading a sample of the 50 Lux Classic shot on my M2 with Tri-X 400. XTOL 1:1.

I shot a film roll with the 35 SR (2023) and this lens back to back. Again, I have no v3 to compare it to but this 2025 lens seems quite modern. Whether that is a plus is for you to decide.

I hope this helps someone. I had a chance over the weekend to take a few more test shots. Body is an M10.

The foreground bokeh in the corners is going to be something to keep an eye on, it could get ugly.

Questions are being asked what a negative MTF means in practice.

The negative MTF is approximately equal to the discount you will get on the Classic Summilux at the Leica Store.

No discounts, but surprisingly it seems not to have been an instant sell-out at the smaller dealers ( poor economy and/or lack of youtube hype ? )

I bought mine from Ffordes, and the SKU still shows as stock rather than pre-order ( mistakenly they list the 11714 as an ASPH lens ). Clifton also still show stock.

What a cool lens! As a devotée of the 35 Steel Rim Reissue, I spent a long time looking for a 50mm to match. I ended up going with the 50mm Noctilux f/1.2. If this lens had been available, I might have gone for it instead. Although I love my 50 f/1.2—I don't think I'll be trading it for the new Lux.

I'm very glad that Leica is reissuing these old lenses. I think they bring something really special to the system. I hope they bring out another 28mm that's faster than f/5.6, so that it's possible to have a really practical 28 / 35 / 50 reissue setup.

35/50/90 was the set-up back in the day. LLL may have stolen initiative on a 28mm.

Your model needs to tidy up his eyebrows.  I'd sack him instantly! :lol:

I found this photo of the new hood:

  • Will it fit when E46 filters are on the lens
  • Is the hood reversible for storage
  • Is it reversible with a filter attached

There is also a plastic push cap supplied ; does it fit the reversed hood

The lens comes packaged with the hood on in reverse with the reverse cap on as well.

The lens hood fits with E46 filters attached.

The lens hood should fit with E46 filter attached in reverse as well, with the cap on.

A bunch of wide open test shots on the M11. Only adjustments are WB, a mild S-curve and very slight straightening on a couple of them.

I took these shortly after picking up the lens, so they were predictably unremarkable. In addition, it was a damp, overcast day. Sorry about this.

Btw, have we settled on an 'official' forum lingo designation for this lens? Classic? Retro? Post-APO-Non-ASPH? Something else?😆

Thanks very much for posting the comparison shots, FrozenInTime; most enlightening.

They also back up what I had been told regarding the quality of the OOF stuff where the v3 and the New Old One are concerned. Thanks again!

Nothing to do with the Summilux and, admittedly, a bit off-topic but just for a bit of fun;

Looks great, I believe I need one to complement the 35mm Lux Steel Rim which I totally admire. But seems the 50mm doesn't have the same "buttery" look wide open as the 35mm steel rim. I like the bokeh though, will try to get one in my hands. Thanks for sharing @lexffm
