Well long fast lenses have own appeal, personally I am happy pairing 50mm with Summilux 75/Nokton 75mm, biggest problem is my eyesight when using RF for focusing.

With respect to 50mm v4  I think it is keeper for me, it is smooth lens.  Despite all Leica optical goodness there are annoying ninja stars and onion rings in most ASPH lenses and some older lenses also.

Yes thats a good lens to have Miaden.  I came close to owning the Summilux 75 on eBay (local seller). Someone was ahead of me. Hold the onions please. Glad you liking the 50 Summilux Classic. It takes me a good six months to really know a lens but I absolutely enjoy the process.  I have started using the lens with macro adapter on the Mono.

I have just received my copy few hours ago. Very nice looking lens, quite heavy (or dense), smooth focusing ring, but....on my copy the aperture ring seems to have a slight "play". It moves sideways like +/- 1mm from the set position (then it clicks to the next position if moved further). I don't think this is normal, but I just wanted to check with you, guys, here. Does your copy behaves the same? Also the aperture "feel" just doesn't seem right....I have also checked my Lux ASPH v1 and my 50mm C-Sonnar and these don't display any "play" on the aperture ring.

Thanks!

On my Summilux III S-E, the aperture ring's detents are very faint. If you roll it backwards and forwards a few times, they become somewhat more detectable. I suspect that the lubrication of the detent ball and spring has thickened and it takes some movement of the detent ball in its recess to make it come a bit further out and engage better with the detents on the aperture ring. I understand for the first 17 years of its life, it lived in a display cabinet of the original Japanese owner, unused, so not surprising if the lubrication became a bit sticky.

Thanks Wilson, but my aperture ring seems on the "loose" side, as opposite to "sticky".

It is the detent button that is sticky not the ring. When the detent button is not engaging with the detents on the aperture ring, it can rotate freely without clicks and would feel loose.

Just a size comparison (the Lux ASPH and the C-Sonnar have filters attached)

I haven't ever seen the code S-E  before Wilson and the new AI enhanced Mr Google which is excellent at retrieving pretty much everything, assumed it was an SL lens.

Here are my 1999 year S-E LTM lenses the 50/2 Summicron and the 50/1.4 Summilux. Both bought on my behalf by a Japanese friend, in a Japanese estate auction sale, at very reasonable prices (£900 for the Summicron, £1300 for the Summilux - both unused and like new). The 50 Summicron V S-E is by far the best of the various 50 Summicron lenses I have owned or used over 65 years of Leica using and collecting. It was rumoured that these lenses, all originally sold only in the Japanese market, were especially carefully assembled and tested, to go some way to accounting for the very high prices Leica charged for them. Neither has a focus tab on them (a mistake IMHO) and as I have very arthritic and recalcitrant hands, focus tabs are essential for me, hence the rubber rings with tabs on both lenses. Ugly but practical. The only thing I did not like about them, was the very cheap and nasty plastic lens cap on the Summicron. Luckily a 50 APO Summicron metal cap is a perfect fit.

I didnt get enough time today to shoot some M Monochrom and 50 Classic Summilux shots before I made an unexpected detour to the hospital - again. All good and home posting this crane shot. It's super sharp on my screen, I have never seen it that sharp on the mono before. I cant even see the dead pixel line (I think there is two of them) but spotted a couple of singular dead pixels.

I like the composition of your workplace shot.  That's usually (for me) a very blah snapshot.

Yes, thanks Stephen if you were referring to the above construction image. I agree with you I don't normally post such shots but I thought it interesting in the appraisal of this new Version 4 Summilux to post a full frame = no cropping shot,. Sometimes the "corner whirls" are obvious and sometimes they're not.

Best
