Digilux 3 = budget M body?

I am anxiously awaiting to see Leica's version of the Four Thirds L1. It will be interesting to see if they can improve on the viewfinder. My only complaint about the Digilux 2 was the low-res EVF. That was the dealbreaker for me. I would rather have a small dim optical viewfinder than a horribly pixelated EVF anyday. However, if Leica, were to use a large bright high-definition OLED viewfinder, with 100% framing... that could be the best of all possible worlds (no need for mirror?). The other concerns I have are the buffer problem mentioned in the LL preview and the reports of plastic(!) used in the L1 lens barrel. I hope this will not be a precedent for future Leica 4/3 digital lenses!

As far as color, I read a rumor that the Leica Four Thirds camera will be black or at least have it as an option. Personally, I believe all Leica cameras should be basic black with chrome as an option. But that is just me. :) My two cents...

Interline sensors have a built in shutter function where the electronics strobes the chip for a period set by the selected or AE calculated shutter speed. The process is exactly analagous to exposing film. The resulting signal level from each pixel depends on the light level and exposure time.

The reason why the D2 has any mechanical shutter is to cover the sensor up, not to expose it. While the captured image is being read out, the live preview has to be suspended and the sensor covered. The D2 shutter is a simple flap and when you hear it go click (not the shutter sound effect), the image has already been captured.

As regards the 4/3 camera, I don't see how it can be an M camera on the cheap. People here bitch about the 1.33 crop factor on the M8, so how would it be to have a crop factor of 2 where the 35mm Summicron becomes a short telephoto and the $3500 21mm Elmarit M is just a bit wider than what we think of as a "normal" lens? Not going to happen.

There's space for 4 cameras below the M8/R9/DMR, all made by Panasonic dressed up to look like Leicas and all with Leica designed (or at least containing Leica IP in their design or production/test processes) lenses made by Panasonic, with everything being done in the Far East. I think they are the new system SLR derived from the L1 and 3 P&S cameras from Panasonic's vast range - Digilux 3, D-Lux 3 and C-Lux 1/2.

I'm pretty underwhelmed by the L1 though the lens may rescue it. I think the obsession with Live Preview and a conventional SLR viewfinder are unhappy bed-fellows. The L1 has also been a long time coming, at least 6 months after being shown and it's barely on the radar.

And I'm sure you've seen the rather poor initial review from Michael Reichmann. Okay, the Digilux 2 lacked a buffer, so the L1 has one--but you can't keep shooting while it empties? Strange 'quirk.' ("No dynamic buffering" heading at http://www.luminous-landscape.com/reviews/cameras/Panasonic-L1.shtml)

By the way, thanks for the paragraph on the use of the mechanical shutter in the Digilux 2!

Interesting review HC which I had not seen. Matches the impression I had from elsewhere that the lens rescues the camera but the camera alone has enough issues for it never to be on my shopping list. If re-badging this is going to be Leica's initial effort in the 4/3 market, I wouldn't bet on its success.

What''s of particular concern from the review are the comments under "Missing LCD" because I worry whether the same idea has been applied to the M8 through over-zealous minimalism. The leaked photographs do not appear to show any way to tell the operating state of the camera at a glance which is a hall-mark of the DMR, D2x and R-D1, to name but three. Maybe they have put more information in the finder.

Actually the E1 has less AA filter than Nikon, Canon, and Pentax. In fact, the images are "sharper" as the expense of noise control... plus moire isn't too bad with the E1.

Of course, whereas others are shaving mirrors and banging off flanges, I'm shooting pictures!

I tested the E1 once only but i found it *much* softer than my D70, even with the 'kit lens' of the latter on...

Softer than my R-D1 as well, the AA filter of which being rather strong though...

Perhaps i've used a poor body...

Yes quite soft indeed. Raw of course. Was a Oly 'kit lens' as well, sorry i don't remember which, but the results were so inferior to the Nikon combo as far as sharpness that i rejected the Oly's and i did not think of it since then...

The Sigma lenses are alright... good value for price.

The best Sigma is still the 28-70mm created for Leica. It was not even a Leica design but it works fairly well. I am astoundished by its performance.

But even that will be replaced by the new 35-70mm for sure! I am way excited for sure. :D

I meant that body, if it's not a fake.
