Which "pocket camera"? X2, X113, or some ...-LUX?

I am looking for a Barbour pocket camera, which will largely live in said coat. I am eyeing a X2 or X113. X2 would be my preference because of the dimensions. I am also considering the C-Lux which came in "gold" and navy blue. Or D-Lux 109?

First of all, I was surprised to see the (asking) prices. I thought the X2 is a semi-obsolete piece of rebranded "§%&/ 🙂 but no, we are talking 800-1000 EUR. Which made me think about the somewhat too bulky X113 and then I thougth about D/C-Lux.

I have other cameras to cover high end use cases, so its really about some "beater" camera. What do the experts say?

I have the X2 and i can say that it fits without problems in the large exterior pockets of my Barbour (Ashby), along with the strap and the optical viewfinder, all in the same pocket, although it does become a bit bulky.

As to X vs D lux, many lux models are more compact than the X but in all honesty the lux models are mostly rebranded Panasonic models, that you can get cheaper if you just by the Panasonic branded. The X is more of a true leica, being made in Germany and all that. So if you want to by something that resembles more the leica experience I'd suggest the X series.

I had x1 , x2 etc. and really enjoyed them.

However today I believe a Ricoh G3(x) has the better sensor and AF and is even smaller.

I own both versions and they are my pocket cameras as an addition to my other Leica gear.

The X2 is what my heart says. Seems to have some improvement over the X1, and is smaller than X113 which looks like a baby sister to the Q.

This is probably the silliest purchase ever, I should put that amount of money towards a lens.

X2 is in yours limit. I spend around the same for LNIB couple of years ago. It is real "made in Germany".

Images are good. Camera is slow and fragile.

Never ever put any camera naked in the pocket. It is best way to get dust on the sensor. Pockets are most sufficient traps of the ugliest dust and else. I have no idea why, bit it is the fact.

X113 is not for the pockets.

But, pockets are not good idea these days. Twenty years ago I have switched to messenger type camera bag. Same bag is still with me. Keys, wallet, camera, glasses, water... Nice and easy and it will fit in anything from X2 to press camera :)

Anyway, still, in 2025 real Leica (made in Germany) most cost effective gear is X2.

Cameras in coat pockets are a NO GO for me. Much prefer to use a small Billingham bag, e.g., a long discontinued 'Billingham f5.6' – small enough to be unobtrusive but also capable of housing my car keys, phone, wallet, diary, spare battery, close-up lenses etc.

https://billingham.co.uk/products/fstop-f5-6-camera-bag_colour-olive .... occasionally available s/h at e.g., Ffordes Photographic for £reasonable

My small Billingham f5.6 is used with my Leica X Vario but it's also capable of housing a digital M.

Leica X cameras (with the exception of the X1) can be used with external EVFs – finders which although branded Leica are made by Epson and are the same EVFs as the Olympus equivalents which can be purchased for £reasonable.

The C-Lux is a badge engineered Panasonic TZ200; both have the same specification and small 1" sensor but the C lux is 2mm wider https://apotelyt.com/compare-camera/leica-c-lux-vs-panasonic-tz200. Personally I much prefer any Leica X compact APS-C camera to any badge engineered Panasonic compact with the smaller sensors.

The D Lux 109 is a badge engineered Panasonic LX100 with a slightly cropped micro 4/3 sensor.

Smaller 1" and micro 4/3 sensor cameras have the disadvantage of not rendering as pleasing / pictorial, out of focus backgrounds as APS-C format cameras.

Leica X camera series' lenses are genuine Peter Karbe team designs.

Leica X series are getting a little 'long in tooth', are discontinued, and Leica Camera AG no longer offers any support / servicing / spare parts. However, David Slater at https://camera-focus.co.uk/our-story.  offers Leica compact servicing including fitting new internal batteries which control the time / date function when the main battery is removed.

Digital cameras are not as finicky as soMe film ones. Most of digital cameras I use were discontinued, not supported.

And they are working. I have GRD, for example, released in 2005.

X series were never in use for weddings "bombing". It is harder to find trashed X ones than in mint condition.

I got mine X2 in 2023, it was LNIB.

My camera and else bag is from Tamrac. One of the Rally series.

Proved by almost twenty years of daily use. Commute, travels, winter hiking, heavy rains and so on.

Huge advantage is single, but very secure and easy to use buckle, side pockets for water and even for doggies bags.

I never leave retracting lenses compact cameras naked after use.

I always use camera size matching neoprene pouches for storage, transportation.

I have the Lumix LX100 Mk2 and it's good but not perfect. I was looking at my X1 pics from 2010-11 and was very impressed with the IQ. I don't have it any more, unfortunately. I would also be tempted by an X2. A 35mm-equiv. lens is my most used focal length.

The Leica CL was very versatile but I was never convinced by the soft dial set up so didn't get one.

An alternative would be the new Panasonic TZ99 but the lens is a lot slower and I'm not sure about IQ -- which to me, is the most important.

I totally agree that the capable compact is a very useful kind of camera and I hope they see a comeback. They have many advantages over a cell phone.

I'm seeing the LX100 & D-Lux Typ 109 for pretty much the same price, which has me leaning towards the 109 because that gray version stands out in an interesting way(also $30 less than the LX100 in that color). I'm also looking at the X2 because it's thinner & a larger sensor despite preferring a slightly wider fov.

I have never find a real pocketable camera yet. it's not about the size, but problems of putting camera in the pocket.

Which pocket? shirt? My shirt pocket is never secure. It's easy to drop the camera. Jacket pocket? maybe, but at most only useful in winter. Pant front pocket? never been cofortable. Pant back pocket? three problems: pick-pocket, easy to drop, but most of all, my body weight is just not pocket camer friendly.

Now I carry camera either on the waist belt or shoulder/across the body.  For these, any Leica M, X, or DL are fine.

All compact cameras are a large bundle of compromises. Some do one thing very well, some try to be competent at everything and the task of finding the right one is usually a tortuous journey of trial and error to find the collection of compromises that actually matches your likes and needs

I had the LX2 when it was released and at that time it felt like the perfect companion for me. We traveled far and wide together and I don’t think I’ve documented my journeys as much or as well since. Many cameras have come and gone since and I’ve even considered getting another but I’m fairly sure that magic will have long since gone.

In the price range you indicate, a Leica III with a 50 Elmar would work great. It pocketable, easy (put some XP2 in with a very wide exposure latitude) and fun to use :)
