Hello,

Everything is in the title, I came across an M8 selling for half what they usually do in quite a good shape (no cosmetic damage) but with 50 000 shutter actuations. This would normally be alright for any camera, but knowing this is a leica and especially since it is almost 20 years what would you do ?

Also, it doesn't come with any kind of guarantee as it is sold by a private seller.

Thanks in advance

If it works well it is of little relevance. A shutter will fail unexpectedly irrespective of number of actuations it is formally rated for 150.000 actuations but over 500.000 has been reported. I doubt whether a shop would give a guarantee on a camera of this age with limited serviceability  if it worries you go for the M8.2 with improved shutter( lower speed)

Ok thanks, because for the usual price of an M8 in my region (which is double the amount of the one with 50k), i can get one off mpb and have the one year warranty as well as a lower shutter count. Also, I thought that the more pictures taken, the higher the risk of failure was. Is the high shutter count really that little of a deal to take into account knowing my alternatives ?

50.000 does not worry me at all. However as I said, a shutter failure is always unexpected. For more modern cameras it is often impossible to know the number of actuations. Shutters do not wear significantly. Failure is mostly caused by things like a grain of sand between the blades, mechanical damage or a small part coming loose.

Over the years and many shutter actuations, shutter become less digital/binary("open-close") and their movements will be more like an analog sine wave (like a warm Minimoog). Thus the photos will become more film-like.

Thanks for your answers,

M8 shutter can be (at a cost) still replaced with M9 shutter in Wetzlar

How much do you think it would cost ? I tried to check on leicas website but it seems that they do not offer a quotation.

It might be better not to know.  Like all of us just trust your shutter to keep going.

I've got two M8's one with nearly 30k actions other with over 10k.  Neither shutter has faltered.

Good luck; it'd be difficult to get a low use M8 now.

I would ask, if the M8 was upgraded in the meantime (limited to 1/4000). It's not only the M8.2 that shares the same shutter with the M9. Also upgraded M8 got that. In that case, I would not be bothered by 50k actuations. If it is still the first (with 1/8000s), that might be gambling.

50K is not a high shutter count and as other have said, a shutter mechanism can fail at any time in a cameras life. Most of my cameras work for a living so get a lot of use, the only shutter failure I've ever had was on a Canon EOS 1 with just a few thousand clicks on it. Going by the book, that should have been as reliable a camera as there is and good for a quarter of a million actuations.

If the condition suggests that the camera has been treated well, I would personally buy it.

Thanks, so even if it cost 800 euros it would be approximately the same price as a second hand one that I could find on mpb.

Yes I asked hoping it would have been replaced but it has not. So now even if I am leaning towards the cheapest one my options are one costing 800 euros without warranty and one at 1600 euros from mpb, with a one year warranty but the shutter could fail beyond that as always.

Thanks for the insight, I think that I will buy it, if the worse happens I will still be paying less than a brand new censor replaced M8 or even just an M8 i great exterior shape.

You already have some M lenses?

No but I will buy a 28mm voigltander to start, which pretty much is the equivalent to a 37mm. The leica one is a bit to steep for now, and for my use case I think the voigtlander will do just fine for now at least.

The M8 does not need sensor replacement. That is the M9.

I really dont want to be destructive. But a mystery M8, and a bottom of the barrel Voigtländer...are you sure this is really getting you "into the M experience" that you are looking for?

If I were to make a recommendation: Look at a M240 bargain (likely a somewhat brassed black version) and a 1970s 35mm Summicron, or a 1990s 35mm Summarit. Yes that will almost double your budget. And yes, you could just buy what you wanted to buy, and trade up step by steps when funds allow.

But since buying a digital M Leica is a pleasure purchase anyway, you can opt for building up the funds and enjoying the anticipation and then work with the "right" kit from day one.

f you decide to have the sensor replaced you will have a brand new one for the price of a who-knows-what from MPB.

Why? and how? These sensors are no longer available AFAIK.
