Q3 43 squeaking sound when rotating to macro mode

Leica said that the sound emitted and somewhat rough turning of the macro ring are within their factory tolerances. Others here and elsewhere were luckier than me and received cameras with smooth macro ring operation. I asked for a refund and am now hesitant purchasing another Q3 43 as I might get unlucky again. Perhaps a Q3 (27mm) is a better bet?

I'm still perplexed as some Q3 43 users reported that they experience a perfectly smooth rotation.

 

Difference people have different tolerance. Something I think smooth may be a squeak to you. 
Just forget about it, shoot the camera and enjoy life.

If it's within tolerance why is this even being discussed?

I own the 28mm Q3 and mine does not squeak at all. I think you did the right thing returning the camera if it bothered you. Everyone has a different tolerance to this sort of thing but if something like this plays on your mind, then back it should go. I do not think you should go for the 28mm though just in the hope it doesn’t squeak! Best to base that decision on the focal length you prefer. I’ve not read of anyone else experiencing this issue so if a 2nd body suffers from it, you are one unlucky chap.

Your camera is fine according to the company that made it - move on with your life and photography I suggest.

I was at the Leica Store in Mayfair today and checked their Q3 43. The macro ring turned completely smoothly and without any noise. I'm happy I returned my Q3 43. I'll try to buy the camera again at a later date and hope I'll get a good copy.

Leica do sound like dodgy car dealers at times, you know, when you buy a new car and it does something unexpected like it stalls when you take a right turn and the garage mechanic says “they all do that Sir, in fact if it didn’t do that then I’d be worried”.

For that amount of money and considering most other people aren't experiencing it, I'd do exactly the same.
