A question for the Leica M community: I own a 24mm, a 35mm, a 50mm and a 135mm lens. I would like to take three lenses with me on my motorbike trip. The aim is to document the tour photographically. Which lens combination would you choose?

Which is your favorite focal length?  As much as I try I never really get on with either the 24 or 21 and think I could be happy traveling with just a 35 or 50 depending on my mood when I am selecting camera equipment.  I tend to travel with a 35/90 combo.  In your case I would take 24 and 135 and leave either the 35 or 50 at home.  I would argue that 35 and 50 are pretty close so you don’t need both.  The 24 can be cropped to 35 and the 50 can be cropped from 35.  So, 24/35/135 or 24/50/135.  Don’t think you will miss any photos with one combo over the other.

Thank you for your answer. It is difficult to distinguish between the two combinations 24 - 35 - 135 and 24 - 50 - 135. 24 and 35 mm are already close to each other. 24 and 50 would make more sense. But 50 mm offers less depth of field for the genre than the 35 mm and when travelling I like to show the subject in the context of the surroundings. I don't have a focal length that I generally favour. It always depends on the context and that is very diverse when travelling.

Well, the 24 would certainly show context, perhaps too much.  Honestly, there are days when the 35 is on the camera and days when the 50 is on the camera.  For me it depends on which way the wind is blowing and/or the phase of the moon.  There is no correct answer and there is no wrong answer.  And with any fixed focal length, you need to use your feet.

I have a hard time imagining a situation where carrying 24/50 combo would prevent you from getting a photograph if you were carrying a 24/35 combo instead.  When I carry three lenses, it tends to be a 35/50/90 which is the CLASSIC photojournalism combo (my original training in photography).  And the frame lines of Leicas best camera, the M2.

I do tons of touring by motorcycle (own four of them).  Usually, it is with a 35/90 combo as I have said.  Leica lenses are small so you could carry all four if push came to shove.  I have done trips with only one lens along, either 35 or 50 and enjoyed it.  No one says we have to use full frame unless you are shooting slides back in the olden days.

Or leave both 35 and 50 at home and buy a 40 which would be a lot cheaper than a Tri Elmer!

Three lenses are a lot for a motorbike trip. But if you can carry three lenses, there should be space for four lenses, too. 😉

At the end of the day it depends on your personal style of making photos. Personally I would go for the 24 + 50, maybe 35 only.

Thanks for the feedback 35/90 is a good combination. At the moment I'm leaning towards 24/50/135. That's close to your recommendation 35/50/90. I don't have a 90mm and the 24mm is more challenging than 35mm.

Thanks for the feedback. 35 mm without interchangeable lenses would be the best solution. I can fit a camera and three lenses in my bag. That tempts me 🙂
