I had the same decision to make—and went for the M-A. Better viewfinder, more framelines (which I actually use), easier film-loading. And does a Leicavit even exist for the M2? I like mine on the M-A.

There are numerous Leicavit-like and Leicavit film advance devices for the M2. The newest is the Keks version for just under $700, the oldest would be an original from the 1950's which would cost as much as a nice car.

I just went through this, well, I went to buy and M2 and I thought that I should compare it to the MA given it’s basically a new version.

So I tried both at Red Dot camera in London. Both beautiful. Splitting hairs the M2 felt a little more smooth and solid but you’d only tell side by side. 

I went with the M2. Money wasn’t an issue, so it wasn’t the cheaper price. Didn’t hurt though. The M2 is also a useable piece of Leica history, and for me something different from my M6, that wouldn’t supersede it either. A new camera is just a new camera, unless it’s your main camera or you’re using it on jobs to me the M2 had more character. 

If you go for the M2 you can get a very good quick load kit, better than Leica’s original one from camerworks in the UK. Turns it into a modern loading system basically. 

I was also tempted by a brassed MP but I really didn’t want anything to compete with my M6 as I said, I think weather you want something to support or take over from your current camera is quite important.

In this case I would choose the M-A because I prefer an automatic frame counter.

If we were comparing something like the M4 with a hypothetical M-A that looked like an M4, I’d probably go with restoring the M4 because all things being equal, I’d find a restoration project fun and gratifying.

Automatic reset while base plate removed ?

For me on M4 also, same as M-A.

 

I'd like true vulcanite on M-A, even if the leatherette on my two M-A are good choice of different grain.

Let it fall off. And when the camera had turned completely into a scabious rat you may want to get a new leatherette. Or not because that rat thing is kinda cool.

I’d shoot 20 rolls or so and then reevaluate. I bet you’ll figure that one film M is not enough and a second body is essential to deal with the different film stocks you’ll be using. In that process, you also figure that one body should have a light meter. An M4 bundled with an M6 is a great film photography kit!!

Me too. Tape is your best friend (besides the M6, which only requires one piece of tape, I also own an M4P which is Leica’s most heavily branded camera ever. Totally Ridiculous. But it’s a brilliant piece of iron, which I got freshly CLAed for a more than acceptable price. Now in its 200+ roll it’s like the first day, except that the Vulcanit starts to become brittle and is prone to fall off. Got to embrace that.)

I have that with lenses. Not the housings, it's the glass and the grease of the focusing mechanism that must be perfect.

My current M film setup, M-A and MP and I couldn't be happier. Agree with the dotless requirement. I have one loaded with daylight film and the other with Tungsten (usually SilberSalz35 stock, 50D, 250D, 200T or 500T). Shall I get a third for B&W 🤦‍♂️

So the M4 arrived. In a very nice condition. Some small dings on the edge of the top plate near the rear opening of the viewfinder. Vulcanite in very good condition. Chrome is clean and a good scrub made it even cleaner. Will Q-tip the shit out of it later. Shutter times sound ok. Bottom plate almost like new. Self timer works. Frame selector works. Focus patch in viewfinder as bright as in my modern Ms. Rear window with ASA wheel like new, black paint on its frame complete and unscratched. Shutter makes that funny noise at 1/15 that it is supposed to make. Vulcanite smells a bit like "vintage camera shop", will try to clean it gently. Will buy a couple of rolls of film and shoot some test photos. Then ask Leica Wetzlar and 1-2 independents about CLA and turnaround times. The camera looks like a new M-A that has been in my careless hands for half a year.

God is that a nice little camera.

Congrats on the M4.  I used one for five years selling it last year after purchasing my MP.  Some argue that it was the best made of the classic Leica film bodies before Leica cheapened the manufacturing process by removing the condenser lens from the viewfinder of the M4-2 and subsequent models until the MP.  In my opinion, the only thing you get with an MA are 28 and 75 frame lines and a newer camera.  However, you will pay double the price for an MA (except for a black paint M4 which can be double a new MA’s price).

If I decide on a second body (unlikely as I don’t shoot enough to justify), it will be an M2 or M4.  I still find the viewfinder of the M2 to be the best I have ever used, especially with a 35.

I think you made a great decision.
