The difference may be caused by using different EVFs. In active LV, Visoflex 020 is always on, while Visoflex 2 can only be on when the eye sensor detects the eye's proximity. EVFs are a major battery drain.

Hmm. At least with the M10-R and M10-M, I fit the Visoflex 020 and leave all three EVF/Display controls on Auto. I press the LV button. Now the LCD is on and the  Visoflex 020 off until I move my eye to the Visoflex, then it switches on and the LCD turns off.

The controls let me customize/refine this behavior in various ways, but I don't see the Visoflex 020 being always on by default, at least on the M10 series cameras.

I dislike Auto mode because the LCD is on if I am not looking through the EVF.  I prefer EVF extended mode, which is not available with M10 cameras. In EVF extended mode, the EVF and LCD are off unless you press the menu or image review (uses LCD or EVF) or look through EVF (Live view). It is more energy efficient and less distracting than the Auto mode.

I use Live View with M10-R and M10-M (along with the Leica FOTOS app for tethered, remote operation) when I'm doing negative capture or tabletop/macro work. The usual battery performance is about 350 exposures vs 500 to 600 exposures in average use with the rangefinder. I don't know that I could say that represented "horrendous battery drain" ... After all, you're asking the camera to do far more than 2x the work in operating the sensor and running the LCD, etc, and all of that takes power to do. ??

It is very good to hear that Leica has improved the M11's power efficiency and speed of operation in this respect. It also should be noted that they increased the battery capacity by about 30%, according to the spec sheets, to accommodate the M11's new functionality. Plusses and minuses... We haven't yet achieved getting 'something for nothing' or a perpetual motion machine. :)

I’m not suggesting that the battery drain is not to be expected based on the workload it has to deal with vs the size of the battery. I’m merely stating that in my opinion it’s really bad when in constant live view and the only weak point of an otherwise excellent digital M iteration. When I use just the rangefinder, which is almost always, it’s perfectly acceptable and I rarely need more than one battery for a day out.

That's simply a matter of choice. I only turn on Live View when I'm actively using it to focus or frame, and whether the EVF is fitted is just a matter of whether I feel I need it for the particular shooting situation. When I'm done with a shot, I turn Live View off and both EVF and LCD are off by default. This saves a lot of needless battery drain.

Heh ... I think the use of the word "horrendous" is questionable when you expect a particular level of additional power consumption because you've turned on a couple of additional power consuming features. I would use the word "horrendous" when the amount of additional power consumption was well beyond what was expected from use of the features.

A small point, and probably a matter of nit picking the language more than anything else. ;)

What is to be garnered is that the difference between the M10 and M11 series in this regard is that the M11 is more power efficient in such use. And that's useful to know, particularly if you use Live View a lot.
