I asked the same question in another context - and got the following answer:

  • heic is private format owned by Adobe
  • it may not have a long life ahead of it

Actually, I had a lot of heic files that I had downloaded from the google cloud.

Using photoshop I made a batch convertion from heic to jpg. It took no time.

PS. I have reset the "fotos" app on my iPhone to store files en jpg format rather than heic. I opened the settings for 'fotos'  - opened the "optimize iPhone storage" from heic to other.

That answer was wrong. HEIF (usually stored with filename extension .heif or .heic) was developed / specified by the "Moving Picture Expert Group" (MPEG) and is an ISO/IEC standard. It provides more options (e.g. saving data with 10 bit per pixel) than JPEG.

Speculations about its life cycle currently seem to make little sense.

Whether Leica will integrate it into the camera firmware in the future is also impossible to say today. At least the Leica LUX app supports it.

JPG and HEIC are totally different animals. While JPG has been designed for efficiency and is - thanks to libjpeg and others - available on every platform, HEIC is a file format that allows for more flexibility and capabilities. Many viewing platforms do not have builtin HEIC viewing capabilities yet. Effectively, HEIC is more comparable to DNG than to JPG.

A valid question therefore could be to ask Leica for HEIC instead or additional to DNG, but JPG should stay for maximum compatibility.
