Advertisement Posted December 31, 2024 Posted December 31, 2024 Hi ALScott, Take a look here tempted by SL2-S. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Eoin Posted December 31, 2024 Share #42 Posted December 31, 2024 Yes!, another please. I remember seeing Leica dealers offering new SL2/SL2-S here in Europe heavily discounted a few months ago, they seem to have dried up. As an avid M user, I dipped my toe into the SL world a few months ago for a mint SL2 along with the adapter, I thought it was very impressive and the first time in my life I could stomach an EVF. Fast forward to today, after buying the Summilux SL (what a beast) it was quickly followed by the APO 35, 21 and 90. I would like to see what all the fuss is about regarding the SL2-S. The M lenses perform admirably on the SL, but those APO Summicrons, particularly the stunning Super APO 21 are on a totally different level. As my ageing eyesight deteriorates despite my love of all things M, the SL2 and SL lenses have proved to be a very nice addition.

ALScott Posted December 31, 2024 Share #44 Posted December 31, 2024 (edited) Just ordered one from Camera West/Leica SF. They have the same deal as B&H. Give them a call. Pumped to get a back-up body. Edited December 31, 2024 by ALScott

jaapv Posted January 2 Share #48 Posted January 2 Not for me. The SL2S ticks all the boxes for me so I have absolutely no interest in a hypothetical successor.

It would have to be a major upgrade in IQ/Low light for me to buy. As dumb as this may seem I don't like the power button on the SL3, nor do I like the implementation of the tilt screen. If the IQ blew my SL2 out of the water then I'd bite. I'lll probably wait for the 3s to drop and then pick up a used 2s. Really wish I was home in the US for the price drop. Or i might just get an S5II to go with my SL2. Edited January 2 by Jptsr1

Once I pay shipping and tariffs they aren't much cheeper than buying from the Leica store. Here in SG there hasn't been a price drop and you have to buy it bundled with a lens. Or did you mean used? LocalHero1953 Posted January 2 Share #52 Posted January 2 It's surprising how many people succumb to the lure of a new model, despite the current one doing all that they ask for. After all, @jaapv, it wasn't that long ago the the S5ii did all that you could ask for😉. If the SL3-S is no more than a SL3 with a slightly higher res sensor than the SL2-S, then I doubt I would switch either, even though I like the tilt screen and could live with the power button. But marketeers always seem to pull one more rabbit out of the hat when we're not expecting it, and I look forward to seeing what it is this time. 1
jaapv Posted January 2 Share #53 Posted January 2 It still does. It is part of the working trio SL SL2S and S5Ii. I need redundancy when traveling.
lykaman Posted January 2 Share #54 Posted January 2 Leica like other camera manufacturers understand the art of marketing. Add an ‘S’ or ‘Pro’ and maybe even an i, possibly Mkll and the public queue Up. On the other hand too many have far to much disposable income! Of course the newest in most cases does have improvements, though not always to the betterment of IQ or tactile use.. Getting on the latest and greatest technology train is something many have been programmed to ride.. 🍻

We are at the point now where significant upgrades to digital cameras happen every 4 years or so, as was the case with film cameras. I don't think that it's a cynical marketing ploy for Leica (and every other brand) to offer new or improved bodies according to that schedule. BernardC Posted January 2 Share #57 Posted January 2 48 minutes ago, jaapv said: And the upgrades become less and less significant…. We've seen 3 types of upgrades over the past decade: light sensitivity (noise at high EIs), video functionality (including read speed), and total megapixels. Frankly, if you don't shoot video, and you rarely shoot at very high EIs (6400 and above), none of this affects you. Image quality at low and mid EIs hasn't noticeably improved in a long while, certainly since the SL/M240 generation of cameras. Many here will argue that the M9/S2 generation reached peak IQ, even though they had limited dynamic range. Megapixels is also a non-essential for most photographers. Even if you print very large (over 1m), you won't see much difference between a 6-year-old SL2 and a new SL3. You'll see more improvement at any image size by investing in the very best lenses. Personally, I tend to buy every second or third generation, unless I can actually benefit from a new feature. I don't blame Leica for updating their offer every few years, but we as photographers don't have to follow in lock-step. This is not different from analog camera evolution: the M4, M5, M4-2, M4-P, and M6 were also released in (roughly) 4 year intervals. I'm sure that some photographers bought each one as they came out, but most of us would be happy with any one of them.
sblitz Posted January 2 Share #58 Posted January 2 I think it is a little different between analog and digital camera upgrades. Analog, back in the day, it was electronics -- metering, shutters, easier film loading, etc etc etc -- because essentially it is a light proof box with a lens. Digital the is "film" is being upgraded as well, the sensor. How much does make a difference? Range matters most to me. In that regard, I think the SL2-S is just perfect. ALScott Posted January 9 Share #59 Posted January 9 (edited) Just got SL2-S Monday and have only fired off some shots around the house with Sigma 70-200 and I have to admit it was very satisfying. Just hearing that FPS compared to the SL3 was great, beyond great really. It took me back to my EOS 1v days, loved the sound of that shutter firing off. Don't misunderstand, I love my SL3 but the SL2-S hearkens back to my early days in film and 10 FPS and I loved it. Hopefully headed to Yellowstone again Friday if we can get out of here and I am super pumped about using the SL2-S alongside the SL3 and M11P. At first blush it looks to be a massive addition to the group. Edited January 9 by ALScott
