I've just downloaded ON1 after being a Lightroom user for many years.  I have a demo version and I picked a random recent image to try.

As I opened the DNG file I realised I was looking at it after the Lightroom changes had been embedded.  The original image had been overexposed and that was the first adjustment I made in Lightroom.  That adjustment was present in the file when I first opened it in On1.

This isn't what I want, and although I can get the original, unedited file from a backup disk, that's not what I want either.  I'm still a new Leica user and not used to not having sidecar files.  Is there a way around this?  How do other people deal with it?  Can I switch to having sidecar files for future images?

Thanks for reading and sorry if it's been asked before, but I wasn't able to find it anywhere

What Lightroom version are you using?

Storing modifications into the DNG occurs when you manually MetatData > Save Metadata to File.

You may also turn off "automatically write changes into XMP."

My DNGs are not updated with editing metadata.

Lightroom Classic.  What you are suggesting would make absolute sense but I can't find it.  The only place I have 'MetaData' is on Import and there's no option to Save Metadata to File.  I'll google around but maybe it's not part of LR Classic

In LrC menus:

Lightroom Classic > Catalog Settings > Metadata

MetatData > Save Metadata to File

I'm on Lightroom Classic 14.1.1 and it doesn't have that option - Screenshot attached

I have always had 'Automatically write changes to XMP' checked, but that doesn't work for my Leica.  The second shot shows a sample of files that were uploaded on 2nd December and how their modified date is changed by Lightroom.  I have now unchecked the second option but since it didn't refer to the original files, only JPGs, TIFFs, etc, I'm not convinced that will make a difference.

I am guessing that turning off "Automatically write changes to XMP" will stop editing changes from being stored in the DNG.

I now have the definitive answer from Adobe.  If I don't want my DNG files to be altered I must uncheck the 'Automatically write changes into xmp' option.  That way the changes will be held in the catalog only and are not available to outside tools unless I manually add the metadata one photo at a time.  It's not my preferred solution but it is a workaround while I test out ON1.  ON1 does produce sidecar files, though they have the extension .on1, rather than xmp, so are probably proprietary

Personally I now generate TIFF versions of any processed file so that it will preserve all my intended changes if I move to a different software that can’t read the adjustments made in a different software. In my case I then delete the DNG file but I know most here would retain it. Perhaps you could make a TIFF and keep the unadulterated DNG too?
