NOKTON Vintage Line 35mm F1.5 Aspherical and ULTRON Vintage Line 35mm F2 Aspherical on M11-P

Recommended Posts

I've got the Nokton 35/1.5 asph type i.

It's my first time using M, so nothing to compare to - Leica or Voigtlander - and so can't be of much help other than to say it feels nice and takes nice images.  There's a little bit of vignette wide open (easily corrected), but not much distortion overall. It does suffer from pretty heavy purple fringing in high contrast - but again easily corrected (if you're happy to do so in post).  The fringing surprised me, if I was to go back in time I'd maybe try to compare to some other options.  It feels really nice in the hand, very smooth, and is small and light (the type II is brass and a bit heavier).

There are plenty of very detailed/technical reviews online, but to be honest for 'fun' photography I couldn't really care less about all that stuff - it's just the kind of pictures that come out that interest me and I'm more than happy overall for the price. There are loads of images online.  Anything posted here by me is on the 35/1.5 (but I'm a newbie to Leica).

I can't imagine what a 4-7K Leica lens brings in addition, and I'll probably never find out!

The F2 Ultron seemed like good value too. Not sure how much you really need 1.5 on a rangefinder, but I wanted to try it.  If the images are as sharp with less purple fringing I'd probably seriously consider that one - but no idea how it performs - it seems very popular.  As does the classic 35/1.4.

Mine might be for sale soon, but not because I think it's a bad lens....

I own both Nokton 35/1.5 asph and Ultron 35/2 asph. The Ultron is tiny and very sharp with a rather busy bokeh while the Nokton has the same size and a similar rendition as the current Summicron with the added benefit of a shorter MFD (0.5m vs 0.7m). As for the Summicron 35/2 v4 (11310) it is a character lens that is not easy to compare. I use it with pleasure on portraits the same way as the Nokton more or less, while i find the Ultron too harsh for this purpose but it is a subjective matter as you know. The one i use the most among those 3 is the Nokton so far.

The Ultron 35/2 asph is a lens i bought for the digital CL so i did not use it much on the M11. The first snap below is a crop of a pic i posted above (bee). The second one was shot with the M11 and a Leica macro-adapter (flower). I just shot the third one for you (snow).

The biggest difference between the Voigtlanders you mention and the 11310 aka 35 cron v4 aka King of Bokeh....is that the CV lenses are aspherical while the older summicron is not.

You'll generally find CVs are sharper across the full frame (especially the corners), less chromatic aberration, and busier bokeh on the aspherical lenses vs the v4 cron.

I tried a Nokton Vintage Line 35mm F1.5 Aspherical VM on my M11 versus my Zeiss 35mm/1.4 Distagon ZM and Apo Lanthar 35mm/2 VM, and I didn't like it much at all. The edges and corners were much too blurry wide open for the Nokton, with smeared details, versus the clean Zeiss imaging. Stopped down the Nokton 35mm never equalled the optical excellence of the Apo Lanthar 35mm wide open. But I like modern high contrast high detail lenses, so your milage may vary. And of course the Nokton is much smaller than the longer lenses I compared it to. For my 'character' 35mm, I recently got a Summicron 35mm/2 version IV Germany and I like that better than the Nokton, though I have sold the Nokton so I can't do a direct comparison.

I considered those other two you mentioned before I bought the 35/1.5

I ruled out the APO as it’s pretty big and heavy in Leica terms and didn’t seem right on the body somehow. Nice lens though.
The Zeiss is a fair bit more expensive and also big- at that price I’d probably push to a used Leica lens.
