jagstang Posted November 3, 2024 Share #1 Posted November 3, 2024 Advertisement (gone after registration) I understand that the M11-P has a sapphire glass screen, which theoretically makes a screen protector unnecessary. However, I've recently come across reports of scratches on the screens of M11-M cameras, which has made me a bit paranoid. I don't like babying my gear but still want to protect the screen from damage. My M11-P looks fine so far, but I'm curious if others use screen protectors on theirs. I read online that a Leica representative advised against using screen protectors, claiming they could damage the anti-reflective or oleophobic coating. I’m not sure how accurate that information is, though. What is the consensus on this?

I just wanted to know whether I'll damage the alleged coating on the Sapphire glass (if this is even a real thing) if I change my mind and decide to remove it later. Perhaps they are talking about the hard plastic /glass type. Your judgement, but I see no risk with type I used, which is made in Germany for your assurance.. rkny Posted April 24 Share #7 Posted April 24 Advertisement (gone after registration) I bought the expert shield for my M11–P. I’ve been putting screen protectors on cameras and phones for 20 years and I’ve never had such a difficult time. Maybe there’s something about sapphire that doesn’t play nice with the expert shield, but once I finally placed it and pressed out some bubbles, I removed the backing and the whole screen protector lifted right off as if it was never placed.

Guest Posted April 25 Share #10 Posted April 25 I usually use Expert Shield, but the last time I used the (very expensive) Leica version, and the results are really good. With any brand of shield the problem is that you only have one chance of fitting the shields and the secret is keeping your fingers only on the very edge of the shield. Dust is the real killer and the best way I've found is to fit it in a bathroom just after someone has had a shower. The hot, moist, air traps all the surrounding dust particles and gives you the best chance of success. Make sure you clean the screen fastidiously before fitting and try to roll the screen protection film back slowly as you gradually lower the shield onto the screen. You can use masking tape, or similar to create a hinge on one end of the protector so that it drops down onto the screen in perfect alignment, but this can be a bit fiddly and I don't bother now. You may find some small air bubbles but they can be squeezed out using a screen cleaning cloth wrapped around the edge of a credit card. However, even the smallest speck of dust will leave a bubble that can't be removed.
thierry40 Posted May 18 Share #11 Posted May 18 (edited) I had the discussion with a dealer that told me he saw one m11p screen with a large scratch but the owner apparently wears a diamond ring and he wondered wether it was not the reason for the scratch. My watches have sapphire glass and I never had any scratched… ok they don’t travel in a bag either. Edited May 18 by thierry40

I am told the sapphire screen is more scratch-resistant but is more likely to shatter than the standard screen.
Derbyshire Man Posted May 18 Share #13 Posted May 18 I’ve got an M11P which has no scratches. Then bought a M11M which within 4 weeks of being nowhere near rocks, metal sand, diamonds, quartz but only in the soft downy inside of a Billingham bag and it got a scratch on the screen. Interestingly the screen is also dimmer than the M11P screen. I strongly suspect the screens changed.
High_n_Dry Posted May 19 Share #14 Posted May 19 I just had this happen to my Q today. I struck the camera on the side of the table and cracked my Expert Shield. I'm not sure if it would have cracked the actual screen, but did offer some protection. Welcome, dear visitor! JNK100 Posted May 19 Share #16 Posted May 19 The fact that Leica sell their own screen-protectors suggests there will not be a problem. I have used one but not removed it so cannot comment I am afraid.
mrmalo Posted May 19 Share #17 Posted May 19 I've recently taken receipt of a new M11-P and I'm having the same thought. On my original M11 I had to replace Leica's screen protector on it because it started to bubble up in mild heat (it wouldn't stick). I'm not sure if they've changed the formula since then Expert Shield quality is fantastic but makes the screen very very glossy. I found it harder to use the screen in day light I think I'm not going to use one on this camera.
Derbyshire Man Posted May 19 Share #18 Posted May 19 Yep all of my Leica screen protectors lifted off in mild heat (eg charging). Now on kinokoo or JJC, they work great although with a sapphire screen I really don’t think I should need one!
bcaslis Posted May 20 Share #19 Posted May 20 I've had the M11 Monochrom screen scratch even though it's supposed to be sapphire. Here is the protector I have used on my M11: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09Y57748T?ref_=ppx_hzsearch_conn_dt_b_fed_asin_title_1&th=1

I think your actual screen is safe… believe it or not, the tempered glass protector is more prone to breakage
