I noticed something somewhat curious this weekend. I was shooting in Los Angeles, away from my typical import routine from camera to Lightroom Classic library.

Instead, I was importing on the go via the Leica Fotos app, and then to Lightroom on the iPhone.

Colors were bold and beautiful in the Fotos app, and then, as soon as they were imported into LR (without a preset), they looked washed out and dull.

I was only shooting in RAW.

Does the Fotos app apply some processing that is lost in LR? Is there any way to preserve the look of the RAW file that comes across in Fotos when importing to LR?

I have the same problem with Photoshop 2024 on an older iMac. It probably is a consequence of not getting the latest Adobe DNG converter and program version (no longer possible with my old operating system), although Photoshop is still being regularly updated. I am struggling to get colors right in post processing.

Strange. I am up to date on LR. I was shooting in DNG only, so I didn't think that there would be a Leica Look applied when transferring to Fotos.

I wondered if maybe LR is applying incorrect camera defaults to Q3 43, but I think that the most recent Camera Raw includes the 43.

Below is an example of the color difference between Fotos and LR mobile (both before any edits).

Did you set the camera to iDR (intelligent dynamic range)? That would brighten the depths and the image as a whole. I don’t like this setting, giving the images an artificial look and overemphasizing the colors.

Good thought. But I think this is a setting only for JPG. But you might be right in that the preview image in Fotos might use a JPG that has been processed. I was shooting in RAW only, and I figured the RAW image would be shown in Fotos. I agree that the image from Fotos looks oversaturated, but conversely, the same image in LR looks washed out (before adjustments).

DNGs all have an embedded JPG that has been processed according to your current JPG settings, even if you are in DNG only. At least that's what's happened with my cameras: I don't have a Q3 43. Till tomorrow🙂.

Best wishes, have fun!
