However, I decided to stretch my budget and got a Summicron instead - which turned out to be the new v2 6-element when it arrived. I used it for 40+ years. Finally got a 2.8 Summaron as well as a nice 8-element Summicron after I retired, and found I liked the Summaron images better. It seems to me to often appear sharper than the v1 Summicron as it seems to have higher contrast.

For some people interested in the Summaron the Summicron vs. Summaron question will certainly be the elephant in the room. I have heard similar comments about contrast from other users but couldn't get my hands on a copy yet.

I like its infinity lock - the best design of that feature on Leitz lenses.

For sure!!

That's a great review, and I very much enjoyed the format after I found a browser to do it justice.

Thank you 🙂 I hope this was more related to screen size than browser compatibility? Otherwise let me know....

I for one would be interested in a similar Summary vs Summicron comparison should you be able to get your hands on a copy.

Which Summicron would you want to see compared to the Summaron? The old 8 element v1 or a modern ASPH one?

@f8low

Interestingly, I just went to get some example screen grabs of the formatting being odd, but It now seems to be loading fine each browser?

For reference, I was originally viewing in Safari, and a lot of the images that had the swipe-able feature were appearing very small and oddly positioned. Much too small to see, and clearly not how you'd envisaged the formatting. Re-loading at the time didn't seem to make a difference, but viewing in Chrome was fine from the get go!

🤷‍♂️

I'd love to see a comparison to a V1 8 Element Summicron. These two lenses are, to me at least, the best handling lenses I've ever used on the m system. I love the infinity lock and  the build is spectacular. I'd love to be able to compare the optical output of the two in a similar comparison. Is the hype and/or price justifiable with the V1 8E?

Best, Chris.

Very well structured and illustrated article, congratulations. There is one big fault in my opinion: no color pictures.  Like many here, I don't shoot in B&W, so you automatically make your review less relevant for a large bunch of the potential audience.

Damn, I know what you mean. I thought that was fixed. But good to know... this renders the presentation useless indeed 😅

Certainly a hot topic 🙂 I'll keep it in mind!

I know what you mean. Unfortunately, digitising color negatives truthfully seems to be extremely hard. Every method I know comes with its own 'character' so it will be hard to distinguish the character of the lens. But I am still interested in that route...
