'A Morning In Cambridge' - went this morning to do some street photography, but rather than walking the streets I just sat on a wall outside King's College and waited for subjects to come to me.

It's a type of shot that really attracts me
How do you approach people, do you ask permission or do you pretend nothing is happening...?

I shoot on the sly 😉

As I don't approach people and don't use the viewfinder, people rarely realise that they've been photographed. I use zone focusing (usually with a 35mm Summicron, set at f8.0 which means everything from approx 5 to 12 feet is going to be in focus) and shoot from the hip.

Interesting perspective. You have a very low position. Does it mean that you have your camera hanging around your neck and you just shoot without looking through the finder?

I use zone focusing (usually with a 35mm Summicron, set at f8.0 which means everything from approx 5 to 12 feet is going to be in focus) and shoot from the hip. I 'carry' the camera with the strap wrapped around my wrist rather than have it hanging as that way it's not as obvious. Normally I would walk towards people I want to photograph which means both of us are moving and therefore need a high shutter speed. The above photo's were at ISO400 even though it was a very bright day.

My usual photo's are slightly pointing upwards (have to be careful to under-expose so as not to blow the sky) but these have a particularly low view point as I was sitting on a low wall.

Regards, Tom
