You are correct sir. Ella Shields wrote it, and performed it in the 1920's, and Eddie Cantor and Al Jolson made it famous. And by the way, "Any relation to Eddie?"

Sadly not. I see that you’re in Chicago and by sheer coincidence I’m watching a TV programme about the growth of the railways in your city..

These coincidences just keep going. My grandfather, the one who liked the "If you knew Susi . . ." song, worked for the B&O Railroad and was based out of Chicago when I was a kid. I grew up in Cincinnati, Ohio (where my family is from), but Grandma and Grandpa were in Chicago from the late 1950's until about 1968.
