dan_drabek Posted August 27, 2006 Share #1 Posted August 27, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) A while back I set up a planted aquarium. I let it grow for a couple of months before adding any fish. a small school of tetras and a few tiny catfish. I didn't really want a betta. I know that buying them only encourages the dealers to stock more of them, But I weakened when I saw a display of them on a shelf in the local pet supermart. Bettas usually spend most, if not all of their lives in a half cup of dirty water in a tiny container. They have an organ that allows them to breathe air at the surface of the water, so they can survive living in their own toilet. Most other fish would die in those conditions. I decided to rescue one and give him a different kind of life. Bettas are the "fighting cocks" of the fish world. You can't keep two in the same tank. But they are perfect gentlemen in a tank with small, peaceful, unrelated fishes. I decided to take 'before' and 'after' shots of Mo. He was scared at first--having never known anything outside his tiny little plastic cup. It took him a while to learn how to really swim. But on the second day he started exploring, his colors brightened and his fins unfolded. Now he struts around his new home like a peacock, and seems to be enjoying himself greatly. These are mostly just snapshots. Some taken with the D1 and some with the little Lumix DMC-FX9.

dan_drabek Posted August 29, 2006 Author Share #6 Posted August 29, 2006 Thanks for looking guys. John, it's rare for a betta to attack anything other than another betta. Yours must have been part piraña. Haven't been to the MBA for a while. I suppose it costs about that now. Probably worth it if you haven't seen it before. Stuart, a decent environment does wonders for these fish. DD
