Howard is a retired senior brewery employee who was our guide. He was very animated which made him difficult to nail down in such low light, but naturally knew everything and more...

The quality of all the Hook Norton series is superb, as we have come to expect from you. This one is easily my favorite, however, because it is captures the mood of the place so well. I really like the subtlety of the light, the body position with rim lighting and the jars of grain on the right.

You apear to have misfocused - assuming that you were intending to focus on his face. If you look at the shelf to the right the focus point appears to be in front of the main subject. Also his hands are sharper than the face.

You could be right. When I was a student we had a trip up to the Theakstons brewery at Masham (spl). I do seem to remember that the person showing up round had great difficulty getting up out of the sampling room at the end of the trip - free beer does strange things to students :-)

Could be subject movement rather than focus. The shutter speed is only 1/30th. It's pretty hard to misfocus the M--especially for someone as seasoned as William.

Possibly, but DOF is very shallow at f1.4, and the subject looks pretty static. It might be an optical illusion, but the shelf seems to have a similar in/out of focus plane - look at the third jar from the right, the seeds look pretty sharp, and the badge he's wearing looks blurred too.
