Barralad Posted September 8, 2024 Share #1 Posted September 8, 2024 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi all, I’m hoping someone will be able to help me out. When there’s little in the way of colour in a scene I occasionally switch the JPEG file type to B & W. I’ve just downloaded such a JPG on its own to the Fotos app before sending it to Lightroom (I only have the iPad version for the time being). My question is this; is there still a way of accessing the DNG file (which I presume will be in colour)? I’m beginning to suspect I’ve misunderstood how this works. I thought that the camera takes a colour DNG file and the JPG settings were for just that (I.e., the JPG) but the more I think about this the more unfeasible that sounds. Any help would be much appreciated (I nearly didn’t post this due to the potential to be embarrassed…). Thanks in advance.

It's on your memory card, or in your camera's internal memory, depending on your memory settings—well, provided you chose DNG+JPEG as your camera's image format (as opposed to JPEG only). However I don't know if it's possible to handle DNG files via Fotos app (I don't use this app). . vor 35 Minuten schrieb Barralad: ... (which I presume will be in colour) ... Your presumption is correct. . vor 35 Minuten schrieb Barralad: I’m beginning to suspect I’ve misunderstood how this works. No, you didn't. . vor 35 Minuten schrieb Barralad: I thought that the camera takes a colour DNG file and the JPEG settings were for just that (i. e., the JPEG) ... That's exactly how it works. Barralad Posted September 8, 2024 Author Share #3 Posted September 8, 2024 Many thanks for the quick reply. That is reassuring. The thing I need to do now is work out how to access the DNG file on the SD card. This is what I did: [1] Saved image as JPG + DNG [2] Set JPG to B & W High Contrast. [3] When the camera was connected to Fotos, downloaded just the JPG. I can’t see how I can do a second download (of the DNG file). Thanks again. Anbaric Posted September 8, 2024 Share #4 Posted September 8, 2024 (edited) In the Photo File Format menu, have you set 'DNG + JPG' or just 'JPG'? If it's the former, then you will have a DNG on the card and will be able to access it one way or another, including processing it to a colour image. If it's the latter, you will only have a JPG and the settings (such as B&W) are baked in. Edit: I see from your reply it's the former. Have you tried accessing your card via some other app, or connecting your camera or card in a reader to a computer? I don't know the iPad, but there should be other photo apps and file browser apps. I think the basic Lightroom app is free. Edited September 8, 2024 by Anbaric
Barralad Posted September 8, 2024 Author Share #5 Posted September 8, 2024 Hi, Yes, it’s the Lightroom app for iPad. This is currently all I’m using - camera + Fotos app + Lightroom app - as it’s all I need, most of the time. I’ll have to set up something more ‘substantive’ at some point (just doing it this way while I get to grips with the camera and digital photography in general). I suspect it will probably be a card-reader + laptop (with full version of Lightroom) as you suggest. Thanks very much for the reply.
vitrail Posted September 8, 2024 Share #6 Posted September 8, 2024 Hello. DNG and JPG are stacked in Lightroom, just choose the development mode to see the DNG appear.
Qwertynm Posted September 8, 2024 Share #7 Posted September 8, 2024 Advertisement (gone after registration) You don’t necessarily need a laptop and lightroom classic. Lightroom CC does 98% of what Classic foes save for HDR and pano stitching. If you connect a USB-C data cable to your iPad LR CC is able to read the files on the camera without having to use the fotos app

Barralad Posted September 9, 2024 Author Share #9 Posted September 9, 2024 Thanks everyone for your comments and suggestions. I need to go away and look more thoroughly into what is stored and where, and how files can be moved around and printed.

Yes, it does, although AI Denoise is not yet available in the mobile versions. Presumably because of the CPU and GPU requirements.
