Overgaard Posted December 19, 2007 Share #3 Posted December 19, 2007 Interesting, not even the 70-180mm looks odd. How is your first impression of use (focusing)? Do you use DMR on your R or is this the first digital R body for you? May I recommend, by the way, the neoprene strap for your Digilux 3. I have it on my D2 and it's a lot simpler in handling. It's as if you read my mind and showed me how my equipment would look with all that wonderful new glass. I'm so happy to see this post - I can't even explain. LVSBB6 Posted December 19, 2007 Author Share #5 Posted December 19, 2007 Thorsten: Focusing is relatively easy for smaller R lens, but heavy lens like the 70-180 really throws the balance off the lightweight D3 if hand-held. I would need a tripod for this lens. I find it easier to focus with the LCD rather than the small & dim VF. The R lens are used on R8+DMR, but I wanted something smaller for traveling so I'm just starting my four-thirds collections. These shots were shot with D2. Now that I've been using the same R8/DMR kit, I must confess that I prefer my D2 to the D3 when going light. The D3 with the Summilux 50 1.4 is a close second for evening/dusk wanderings. The DMR is spoiling me. The R glass is sooo good and I find I don't always like the way the wider lenses (21, 24, 28) frameout with the D3. I think the D3 kit lenses is actually easier to use. rsolomon Posted December 20, 2007 Share #9 Posted December 20, 2007 The R adapter on the Digilux 3 brings new deminsion to my exisiting R glass collection with the crop factor. for example the 80 1.4 becomes an awsome FOV 160mm The R9 & DMR provide a great image BUT it's so big, bulky, and heavy to carry around all day, not to mention you really need to shoot the DMR in raw and post process each frame. I find the D3 with R Glass offers great flexibility and when i want "auto everything" with great jpegs i use the kit lens. It's a strap that goes like the one you have on your R8 from the sides of the camera, and it's that nylon all the way. Except by the shoulder, there's a very compact and nice rubber thing that is about 3x the width of the nylon strap (I have some that are oval rubber pieces and some that are square). Very good comfort, very simple and doesn't get tangled into itself. Also, some of then are made in a way so the strap is "held away" from the camera body (to avoid scratches). How does that JPG from D3 compare to the D2 JPG's. I think the D2 JPGs are great and it's a great camera for a lot of stuff. Since firmware 1.3 the DMR jpgs are certainly usable, but DMR jpgs they just don't offer the full punch and range of the DMR raw files. Raw is really needed to maximize what the equipment can produce. btw: the Digilux 3 does offer faster AF and slightly larger files - its also built on the 4/3rds standard which some on the forum are questioning. I feel that leica would need to produce one hell of an R10 to get me off the Digilux 3 / Rlens combo. i have given up and sold my DMR due to: size / weight / state of technology / and the chatter about the R10. i positioned myself (by luck) with the D3, R adapter, various R lenses, and the 28-100 AF D3 kit lens. I can't praise the D2 enough. Size, weight, silence, lens, manual control. I think I've done 65,000 files on D2 so far. The D3 turned me off a bit when it came out because of the size of the lens and the miror-slap-sound. It simply was a less elegant D2. The R-adapter of course changes things a bit. andybarton Posted December 21, 2007 Share #20 Posted December 21, 2007 I have a thick, wide, padded leather Leica strap for my R8/DMR (cost me £25 new) I couldn't think of using the combination with just the standard R8 strap - the weight on such a thin strap is far too much.
