Serial number

On ebay auctions the seller often informs the serial number of the lens. What's the relevance of that information?

I found web sites that relate the serial number and the year of production but all those sites lack the most recent years (i.e. they are not updated)?

Thanks.

For exactly the reason you have said, Pedro. I have some items up for sale at the moment (to pay for my M2-related follies last weekend :D ) and I neglected to put the serial numbers on the original listings. I was bombarded with messages asking for that info. I never put the full serial number, listing only "1234xx".

Bill

I never understood why not to list the full serial number. Maybe you can enlighten me?:)

Showing the full serial # is crucial based on the fact that many people have

had equipment stolen, and many people have bought equipment that has been stolen.

Purchasing leica equipment leaves a paper trail only if all #'s are shown at any time.

If I bought a stolen lens or anything els, not only do i want the owner to get it back, I want

the thief to get caught and shot in the nuts. (I like to think that all of us leica fanatics look out for each other.)

take care

Dave:)

Dave, I understand exactly what you're saying, but the "unexpectedness" of the language had me really laughing here. Thanks for brightening a really murky Boston morning (bad Nor'easter storm here)!

LoL!

The point of not showing, or telling, the whole serial number is so that your photos (and full serial number) cannot be used fraudulently.

I agree with the other sentiments :D

Bill

Showing the number also helps in determining if you recieved the advertised lens and not another one. The condition as shown in pictures doe differ of course. In the past, some eBayers just copied another picture. Good shops don't do that. Of course.

A register on LFI for those who went nuts after the loss, would be of help to them (trauma-reducing) but I'm not sure if it would get widespread adoption; a good protocoll would be needed for times some unexpected find come out.

Likewise, a small program on the Forum that checks the camera-serial number on the posted pictures would be great fun too.
