fotografr Posted August 28, 2006 Share #22 Posted August 28, 2006 I loosened them up by twisting the focusing ring back and forth over a long period of time. Now they flow seamlessly! I tried that with the 50 ASPH until my hands nearly got numb. Didn't make a bit of difference in my case.
cbretteville Posted August 28, 2006 Share #23 Posted August 28, 2006 I've tried that trick too and things haven't changed in a year. So it's off to the factory.- I've sent Solms an email asking for a quote on a lens CLA, we'll see what they say if they bother to answer. That isn't a given, sad but true. Its just that getting them to answer email inquieries have been a 'challenge'. Not sure about this Carl, but I just sent my package addressed to: Herr Gerald Wagner Leica Kundendienst Leica Camera AG Solmser Gewerbepark 8 35606 Solms Germany +49 (6442) 208 188 Enclose your lens (or whatever) with a letter explaining the problem, together with contact, address and email. You should receive an email with quote. Leica are very busy with worldwide service. Hope this helps a little.
albertwang Posted August 28, 2006 Share #28 Posted August 28, 2006 Actually, moving it back and forth loosens up the lubrication better. After all, sometimes when Leica puts it all together, the lubrication may not be even. On the other hand, if it's something like misalignment then it better go back to Leica. You wouldn't want to touch that if that were the case.
k_g_wolf ✝ Posted August 29, 2006 Share #29 Posted August 29, 2006 > William, just one idea: When sending a nxt item to SOLMS abbreviate LEICA AG, and choose LAG instead for the address. In case LEICA is known by the people handling your stuff, you might have to deal with an insurance claim later on. But actually they should know, it´s a defective item they handle, but you never know. Best
cbretteville Posted August 29, 2006 Share #30 Posted August 29, 2006 Hope this helps a little. Thanks for the address William. What is really scary is that the 90's focusing loosend up yesterday. I was playing around with it as a a result of this thread and now it is suddenly much better than it has been in the year I've had it. That is really strange.... From the serial number mine was made some time in the 2000-2002 time frame and if the guy how had it before me didn't use it, I guess it explains why it took so long to loosen up. Still it is puzzleling, well there is more between heaven and earth than most other places.

BTW, I have a photo image sent to me from Wolfgang Hagen with you and all the others from last year in Austria at the "Dachstein" with the Leica Academie. (But I better not post it on the forum without permission). Looks like you people had a good time! Cheers, William

Good news Carl, and I guess there are quite different reasons why this happens depending whether the lens is old or new, but not surprising. Guest leica_mage Posted August 29, 2006 Share #34 Posted August 29, 2006 [...] What is really scary is that the 90's focusing loosend up yesterday. Mine is so tight I didn't even consider "playing" with it the way I did with my 35mm - my hand hurts after just a few throws!! But now that you got results, I'll do it, and listen to that air going: 'Pffft! Pfffffft!'...
k_g_wolf ✝ Posted August 30, 2006 Share #35 Posted August 30, 2006 > K. P. Why scary ? If it >loosened< I would read: It works more smoothly, but did not become wobbly. This would indeed mean a defect. But this is not what has been posted here. Due to the exercise, the (most likely) hardened grease within the unexercised lens became handwarm and thus got better distributed. As a result the threads function better now. No magic ... And if you can avoid an overhaul of the lens for the time being it has been worth while. Best
wda Posted August 30, 2006 Share #36 Posted August 30, 2006 Some interesting experiences. I thought stiffness was due to lack of use, like human muscles. I'll refrain from entering the debate lest I catch the disease. D**n! D.

Karl Georg, 'Scary' because it happened while this thread was going. I've been twisting that focusing ring for hours and nothing has improved until the other day. And beleive me, I wasn't holding it for a long enough time for it to get handwarm. I had given up and was ready to send her back to the factory thinking I'd combine it with gettng the 6bit encoded lens mount fitted. Loosened as opposed to 'stiff' used in the original post. Could have been more presice I guess and written something like "the motion of the focusing ring is now much smoother through the entrie throw", but that is too long winded. I know it isn't magic and there is a perfectly logical explanation for all the mechanics behind it, the timing is naturally a coincidence and this is the fun/scary/amusing/puzzeling (take your pick) part. Naturally I don't want to send the lens to Solms unless I have to, you have no idea the ammount of paperwork that has be be done to make sure Norwegian customs understand the lens has been away for service and isn't a purchase and thus don't go charging me a lot of money.
