It is fragile ( I already broke one on the 150-600 which is the same dodgy construction whilst the lens was inside a padded bag). It is huge. It is a pain to remove and replace. It blocks the zoom ring when reversed and impairs it when mounted. Fortunately Amazon has the solution. An elegant collapsible rubber screw-in hood of exactly the same dimensions at a mini price, part of a kit at 10(!) €. I ordered a metal one for the 150-600 which will arrive next week.

Jaapv - thanks for the recommendation - just received mine - no idea how they can do it so cheaply - almost embarrassed to put onto the lens!!  Have you tried the plastic petal hood? Does it allow flare at either end or do you think it could work?  Thanks

Fotga. Exceedingly well built and solid No vignetting.

Jaapv - do you use filters with this hood, and if so, do you put them on the lens first, or on the hood outer threads? Thanks- Larry

Are we talking about the sports 70200 Sigma?

I don't find it that bad so far, I also like its rubberized at the front so you can put the lens on it when its not mounted on the camera, or when you touch something with it. I also would assume its better protection for the lens if you touch something with the front of the lens.

Anyways, thank you for sharing alternatives. Always good to know.

It is not much of protection. The one on my 150-600 which is the same but larger broke to pieces after a few weeks - inside the bag. And it blocks the front bit of the zoom ring. I have -needed for my use- IR cut filters on my wildlife  lenses anyway.
