Wojdarm Posted August 17, 2024 Share #1 Posted August 17, 2024 Advertisement (gone after registration) I just purchased the Q3 two weeks ago and used it on a trip already. Love the images but I noticed the viewfinder looks like scratches or smudging on it. I’ve attached a photo for reference. It’s not dirty as I’ve tried to clean it with lens cleaner and a microfiber cloth. This is only two weeks old so something must be wrong. Any ideas as to what is going on and how to fix it? Advertisement Posted August 17, 2024 Posted August 17, 2024 Hi Wojdarm, Take a look here Viewfinder coating scratched. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
jaapv Posted August 17, 2024 Share #2 Posted August 17, 2024 Well, you have send it to Leica, but with the scratches I rather doubt that it is covered by guarantee. If those were not there, you might be able to blame it on a coating failure. Consult your dealer. Contact you insurance for mechanical damage to your camera. Wojdarm Posted August 17, 2024 Author Share #3 Posted August 17, 2024 Thanks, I do find it hard to believe this would happen in such a short time. Maybe a manufacturing defect?
newtoleica Posted August 17, 2024 Share #4 Posted August 17, 2024 It’s been rubbing against something abrasive. Will not happen in normal use. Has it been up against something in a bag? real shame and sorry for you, but I think the Q VF is quite shallow and wide and can get scratched if not protected when in a bag. If not using a camera bag I use a wrap or a soft Leica leather pouch to protect it from keys, coins and abrasive things. Clothing seems not an issue when out and about.

Clearly abrasion, no manufacturing defect. When Leica comes back with a refusal of guaranty, claim it against your insurance.
Jaclo Posted August 18, 2024 Share #6 Posted August 18, 2024 The left top corner looks worn as well though it might just be the image. Strange for a new camera.

Strange for a new camera. It’s been used on a trip already, so not new. Unfortunately it looks like zipper or brass button abrasion. Very annoying but actually preventable. micheldesvaux Posted August 18, 2024 Share #8 Posted August 18, 2024 I had the same problem with my Q2. Do you wear glasses? In my case that was the reason of the scratches. I've put a protection on the evf to prevent new ones.
jaapv Posted August 18, 2024 Share #9 Posted August 18, 2024 Putting a protector on will mitigate the damage somewhat.
jdlaing Posted August 18, 2024 Share #10 Posted August 18, 2024 Is that a protector on there that is damaged and not the bare screen?
Wojdarm Posted August 18, 2024 Author Share #11 Posted August 18, 2024 Unfortunately, it’s the bare screen. I think the comment above was correct and that my glasses caused the damage. Seems like a poor design if that can happen so easily but it is what it is. It looks bad but really the image through the viewfinder looks fine and it seems like Leica repair is both long and expensive, so I’ll probably just live with it. I’ll add a screen protector to it so that it doesn’t get worse. Oh well. Apparently I’m just too hard on this camera.
Wojdarm Posted August 18, 2024 Author Share #12 Posted August 18, 2024 Would anyone take a guess on how long and how much a repair like that might be? (Replacing the veiwfinder glass)
