Johnclare369 Posted August 17, 2024 Share #1 Posted August 17, 2024 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi all. I have a Q2 and a Q2M which I love. I've been considering getting a Black Mist filter which will add a more cinematic look. I can see what it will do on the Q2, but what will it do on the Q2M mono images? Does anyone here have examples or does it not do much in B&W? Thanks.

Anakronox Posted August 17, 2024 Share #2 Posted August 17, 2024 I don’t have any samples to hand, but I use them often across all of my cameras, Q2M and M10M included. I prefer the 1/8 strength for most of my output on full frame. On a Monochrom they will create the exact same effect as on a color sensor or film stock, just without color in the highlights. If you’d like an idea of the 1/8 Black Pro Mist look, I just shot an outdoor art installation at night and they’re posted to my Instagram, linked in my signature.

convexferret Posted August 17, 2024 Share #5 Posted August 17, 2024 I think that the most important thing to note is that the black mist filters aren't really anything like soft-focus filters. For me they have very little if any effect on sharpness, but they do reduce overall contrast and promote flaring in highlights and bleed into shadows. I see it more like applying 1950s coatings to a modern lens. I keep them on my modern Sony lenses but don't on the 1970s Pentax and Nikon lenses that I mount on the same camera as they already have much of the same look. I use 1/8 everywhere as 1/4 is already way too strong and obvious.
Anakronox Posted August 17, 2024 Share #6 Posted August 17, 2024 Exactly that, @convexferret! For me the 1/8 cuts that super harsh look that most modern lenses have. I don’t use them in bright sunlight since they’d completely blow highlights, but at dusk and nighttime, they go on and stay on.
