35mm Summicron F2 asph filter recommendation needed

Hi all, i’m a new user to the Leica M system. I would like to ask everyone here if you have a filter recommendation to the Summicron 35mm f2 asph 11673. Hopefully i can have some insight to which filter that can allow the included lens hood to fit as well.

B+W or Heliopan clear protection filter. Both are made in Germany and use brass filter rings that will not bind on the filter thread. I use a Heliopan on a 28 Elmarit-M ASPH II that uses the same lens hood design as the 11673. The hood easily clears the filter.

We could be more helpful, if we knew the conditions in which you are using your film camera. Most of the reasons for using filters are relevant to those using film. If you are using a digital camera, our task is greatly simplified. 😉

The hood should fit over any high quality coated 39mm filters.  

Breakthrough filters are another respected brand, noted for color neutrality, if that’s important for you.

Thanks everyone! I’m using it for my digital camera the M10. Lens is expected to arrive soon, and trying to prevent fine scratches on the front element. 
Will keep an eye out on the options mentioned!

A B+W UV MRC filter is possibly the best option, very easy to clean and super tough. But the coating on the lens is also super tough so don’t worry about a bit of dust on it.

I had the Leica filter for 3 years on my Q2, was happy with it and when I bought the 35mm 11673 decided to go with the same (for 39mm model # 103030).

Do the Breakthrough Photography X2, X4 fit the Summicron 35mm ASPH II lens along with their lens hoods? I want to try this brand but worry that I'll get them and they won't fit while the hood is on. Several people recommend it for the lens on this and other forums, but other places I've also read about fitting issues.

I wrote to them once and also spoke on the phone but they didn't reply to my mail and the phone support took down my details but didn't know the answer and never got back. Their site also doesn't provide outer dimensions for the filters.

I understand B+W should fit fine with the hood.

I would either call them again or contact a good Leica dealer that stocks them, such as Leica Miami. A good dealer should also accept returns.

Just get the Leica branded or the B+H filter – clear or UV, it really does not matter which. In Canada, a Leica-branded filter, new, is about $75.00; it is a rather small cost to add protection to your lens's front element. It is just a filter, no need to look for any esoteric new-fangled filter from anyone else.

You can also waste half of your life reading about and agonizing over what a filter does orders not to your images.

You can't get a brand new Leica UVa II filter for $75 CAD. Minimum is $200 CAD before tax for a E39mm UVa II, at least from where I am from.

Anyways, I heard the new B+W Masters & Basic UV MRC is not compatible with the screw on hood on the Summicron's or the Summilux's. I've personally tried the B+W Masters 46mm onto my summilux FLE and there was significant rub on the hood when trying to screw the hood in (due to the new added feature of the grips which adds width). With that being said, I don't have any issues with the older B+W 46mm F-Pro or XS-Pro UV filters on my 35mm summilux FLE and my 35mm summicron ASPH II. So best bet to avoid any issues is to purchase a Leica UVa ii filter used or new.

Yes, you are correct, I was looking at the used list from my dealer; a new Leica E39 UVa II filter is listed at $200.

An update on the topic of filters fitting the Summicron-M 35mm ASPH II with the lens-hoods screwed on:

I got in touch with Leica store Miami to check before ordering one - and Josh Lehrer kindly explained that the 39mm and 46mm Breakthrough filters *do not* work with the M-lenses that have screw on hoods if the hoods are attached. The Leica filters would, of course, fit just fine.

After doing a bit more research I ended up with the T-Pro B+W filters, which fit just fine with the hood (I was considering the Master range, esp since the color would match the lens, but felt that T-Pro being thinner has a bit less risk.
