Big John Posted July 6, 2024 Share #1 Posted July 6, 2024 Advertisement (gone after registration) Looking for low priced entry into RF shooting. Happy with specs of the 240 series but prefer newest model I can find. I think that means the ME240 as it was released only in mid 2019. Any comments? Thanks. I have 28/35/50 ZM glass btw. Advertisement Posted July 6, 2024 Posted July 6, 2024 Hi Big John, Take a look here Which of the 240 series?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
GlennS Posted July 6, 2024 Share #2 Posted July 6, 2024 My M240 has a "Quality Check" sign-off card in the box which suggests it was manufactured in 2018. A six year old camera isn't so bad. Spec-wise the M240 family all have the same sensor I think? So an M240, an MP240, an ME240 would all have the same quality of image. If it was me buying another one I'd be looking more at what warranty you get if any and overall condition of the camera. And if possible try to find out if there is any indication of year of manufacturer. If you're buying a much older copy, the battery life *might* be a factor, in which case you might want to get hold of a new one. And don't forget to factor in a good SD card or two, obviously. Ideally I'd really like to know the shutter count but it seems you can't find that out on these. "I have 28/35/50 ZM glass btw" Seems a reasonable set to own! I have the 50, and it's a lovely lens. Big John Posted July 6, 2024 Author Share #3 Posted July 6, 2024 Thanks @GlennS. One of the reasons to go for an ME240 is that they were only produced in 2019, so I think I am right in saying that even the oldest ME240 is newer/younger than any MP240. Everything I read and see about 240 IQ is good, or at least satisfactory to me.
Big John Posted July 7, 2024 Author Share #4 Posted July 7, 2024 Can I add a question pls: I have trialled the M11 and recently also the new M6, how is the M240 VF compared to those cameras? I know the M10/11 have a larger VF aperture (which was noticeable to me), assume the M240 is similar to the M6? I shoot mainly 35mm (and some 28). Thanks. duoenboge Posted July 7, 2024 Share #5 Posted July 7, 2024 I had the M(Typ240) and have the M10 and M10-R. I don't see any difference in the rangefinders. What do you mean with "VF aperture"? The best M(Typ240) is the M-P, because of the 2GB RAM instead of 1GB.
dugby Posted July 8, 2024 Share #6 Posted July 8, 2024 Have you had an opportunity to compare the technical data sheet pdf file for each of the models you are interested in, from the Leica website ? I have shot an M240 (given to my son now) for 8yrs and now have an M10-R. M240 with a Zeiss ZM 50mm Planar is an excellent starting point into the M full frame CMOS models, which will delight your photographic interests

I believe the M-P 240 was also in production until part-way through 2019 which, considering the M-E shared almost all of the features of the M-P, would seem a perfectly logical state of affairs. As already mentioned by GlennS (post #2) with all else being equal my own view would be that warranty and condition would be of prime consideration. The M-P and M-E variants do share the 2Gb buffer if burst-shooting is appealing. Unlike the M-E the M-P has the frame-line selector lever which could be advantageous. Aesthetically-speaking 'Personal Preference' might also play a part. The M-E (to state the obvious) was made in a rather unique finish; has the Red Dot on the face of the top-plate and I believe production was limited to 700 pieces worldwide. OTOH the M-P could be had in both of the regular Leica finishes of Silver-Chrome or Black and comes with the 'Leica' script on the top-plate and no Red Dot. Whichever way you choose to go; the entire range of M240 variations are wonderful cameras capable of producing superb-quality photographs. Best of good fortune in your search. Philip. I am referring to the fact that the viewfinder aperture (the round hole you look through) is larger on the M10 and 11 than on previous Ms. I find the difference noticeable. Thanks everyone for thoughts and comments. Appreciated.
