I am off to Alaska in a couple of weeks for an adventure vacation.  Only bringing my SEM 21mm, SL2-s, and SL 100-400mm.  Also my iPhone with the new Leica Lux app.  Because of travel limitations, I have decided to leave my Q2 home(I know it could be a big mistake).  We may have limited wi-fi in some locations.  So I am looking at something other than my iPhone to view my daily photos.

What do you think of the iPad mini, for nightly review(if wi-fi possible) of photos?

Cheers

I regularly use my iPad mini when travelling. I import to Lightroom mobile using a usb-c card reader (or directly with a usb-c cable). I can view, edit and when connected to WiFi do a back up/sync to my phone for e.g instagram posts. It works very well. iPad Air gives a better viewing size but is that much bulkier.

The only downside for me (compared to laptop) is that Lightroom mobile cannot make virtual copies, nor do panorama/hdr merge, nor does it have the enhance feature for noise/super resolution. Any shots like that I have to process when I get home.

I bought cheap SD Cards and use them as backup.

I transfer the Images via NewQ with my phone.

The other thing I do: I have many SD Cards. So I can shoot many days. And then If I have a day of

I transfer the images. But in most cases I don't override the SD cards.

At the end of 3 weeks I have 20 full cards and a full ssd.

Thats what I found was the best way to protect myself of loosing images.

If you have a good infrastructure you could use a cloud storage to upload your images.

cheers Peter

I always travel with a small laptop and back up my photos to that every day.  It's light enough and small enough to carry in a backpack and has Photoshop Express to do any edits.  If there were restrictions I might go with a tablet, but they're not much lighter than the laptop I have, and a lot less versatile.

Just finishing a week in Alaska, and wish I’d had something like your 100-400! I have previously taken a cheap laptop as a bridge to transfer files onto a portable SSD, but this time I just loaded up with CFe and SD cards. The CFe cards are deliberately much larger storage than the SD cards, and I use them as a form of backup by saving RAW to both cards, swapping out the SD each day, but the CFe only when it’s full.

… of course the SL2-S is 2 SD cards, but the principal could be the same by having large and small capacity cards.

Thanks!

Should I bring the Q2?

At least for me I would definitely want something between your 21mm and 100mm. Assuming you're willing to use APS-mode your 21mm can also function as a 30mm ish for a more 'normal' wide angle. I'm sure you can get awesome long distance landscapes and some wildlife with your 100-400mm, but I would personally prioritise a more standard zoom.

I guess your Q2 fits the bill if you are happy cropping to 50mm/75mm, and would give you a lighter alternative for slower days, and a back up camera. Or maybe you are happy to use your phone for that :)
