It's most likely a LR issue.

This is confirmed by the original poster very honestly.

Nop, its a leica software issue.  Easy to test just open the image in another software.

The latest firmware in theory fixed this. I havent had any flip inages since updating.

Correct, it seems to be tied to the firmware of the M11 line. I think Leica is doing their best to figure things out and eliminate it. It's a hassle on the rare occasions that it happens, but easy enough to fix.

Yup, the bug is is definitely on the Leica side of the house, with my M11-D, 2.20 I encountered a series flipped images with background transfer ‘on’ within and observed in Leica Fotos, later transferred same images to LR and encountered the same flipped (seemed to happen to a series of shots in a row). It’s a simple LR 1 click to fix but just wanted to report this in case others encounter it.

I'd be surprised if it was software rather than the micro gyroscope but you never know! Mine did it for a bit and I rotated it a few times with the lens as the z axis and that was the end of that.

I have seen behavior that seems counter to the gyro theory. The last time it happened, the upside down images were in the middle of a tripod mounted image sequence where the camera never moved.  But, you are exactly correct - you never know with these things.

In my experience, it's a very rare problem...maybe 1 in 2000 images, so I won't worry unless it becomes more frequent.

I also encountered the „flipping“ (which is actually a rotating) with my M11-D, firmware 2.2.0. A sequence of 18 photos within a larger sequence of photos taken during a photowalk was rotated by 180 degrees, both in the Leica app and after importing to Capture One.

I mentioned earlier that this was fixed with the latest firmware… well, it seems like it hasn't. After using the camera for a while with the latest firmware, I got a set of flipped images multiple times. Yes, not as recurrent as before; yes, not a big issue, since you can just flip them back on the computer, but it continues to happen.

Not sure it's a firmware thing, more likely the gyroscope getting confused/stuck. I don't know though obviously. There's never been any claim that the firmware has addressed this as an issue.

After my confidence I’ve just had about 18 out of 43 images rotated wrongly on my M11D.

That’ll teach me!

This just started happening to me today after installing firmware 2.2.3. I have had my M11-P for just over a month and this is the first time it has happened.

Happened to me ydy once but 90 deg not 180.
I found it strange but did not bother much thinking before reading this thread.

I may have turned the cam from portrait to landscape rather quick before pressing the button …

Could be.... but the times it happened to me, the camera was pretty much in the same place and fairly still for a whole bunch of shots, and yet somewhere in the middle of that batch a chunk of them imported into Lightroom upside down, whereas on screen on the camera they were correct.

Was one of the many reasons I sold it.

Just to add a little to the topic. I just had the issue while importing photos taken with my Q2…. Taken on portrait orientation originally, imported to LR direct from the af card … 2 photos out of 70+ where sideways….

It may well have been a card issue or a LR issue.

It has never happend to me but if it had, it is not a big issue....
