And relatively affordable.  CL 1.4x extender, sigma 70-200 DG DN 2.8 makes for a 400mm zoom 4.0 at impeccable image quality and good AF ( admittedly not Sony, but close) and about 4 EV OIS. 2.2 kg makes it a featherweight compared to the Canikon bazooka solutions. Ideal for the occasional Safari goers, amateur sport shooters,  etc.

At any rate it is more svelte than my main set at approx 5 kg.
S5ii, battery grip, 150-600, dot sight and chest pod  Still beats the Canikon stuff, though

Just a couple of quick snaps from this morning - It is easy to handle, far easier than most "professional" long combos - OIS works well, just the thing for occasional users (Or guys like me who don't like to schlepp heavy gear when walking the dog.)

Really interested in this. I was out shooting at EAA (Experimental Aircraft Assoc) meet in Wisconsin with my CL and 55-135, which was nice, but no comparison to my son with Canon R5 and 100-500mm lens. He was practically getting water droplets on wing edges, while I was getting nice airplane shots. So this has some appeal.

What mount do you get the Sigma lens in, and if the TX is a necessary addition, which one is it?

Thanks for posting this!

CL, Sigma TC-1411, 70-200 DG DN OS Sports L.  The CL has L mount. If you leave out the TC you get  98-280 f2.8, with the TC 400 f4.0. AF will be a bit faster than your 55-135.

Thank you for this. Seems like the ideal upgrade path for the CL!

It is no comparison to Canon. I have got R10+100+500mm Super light kit for wildlife and everything long telephoto. Eye AF on birds and everything else works flawlessly. CL/SL2 is just not even worth comparing.

Yes, I am sure you are right. Still, sometimes it's fun (?) to bang one's head against the wall and go against logic.....

Whatever. It works perfectly in my hands - but then I am not dependent on automation. I honed my skills on manual lenses in a time that the photographer took the photographs, not the camera.

Nice pitch and good for you of course, but realistically why bother? If you care about the result, there are plenty of tools which will get you consistent good result.
Although I highly doubt your hit rate for anything what moves relatively fast (nothing personal).

If you really need frills like eye recognition on birds ( although it beats me what for) you can use the light Panasonic S5ii and crop down to 20MP. The AF and IS of the Sigma 70-200 and the Pana are in the same league as the Canons and Nikons. And the sensor rendering of both CL and Panasonic is preferable by far to Leica-conditioned eyes. I especially dislike the Canon interpretation. For BIF my preferred combo is S5ii with Sigma 150-600 and Olympus EE 100 dot sight.

Jaapv do you find the CL with the Sigma 70-200 f2.8 with the 1.4 extender to be a better lens than the Leica L mount 100-400mm (which is a copy of the Sigma).  I used the 100-400 on my CL in Africa (I had to manually focus since the CL battery wasn't sufficient to AF the lens) and liked the results.

The 70- 200 is certainly a better lens, even with TC faster and more accurate AF, better IQ. However I used the 100-400 happily on the CL. Battery life was not really an issue. I have plenty of spare batteries; they cost next to nothing. The 70-200 will be more power hungry, having dual AF motors and better OIS.  But the 2,8 aperture without TC comes in handy.

Well, anyway, I’m in Majete Wildlife Reserve African Parks) in Malawi right now. Stripped down to the essentials , an SL with Sigma 70-200 and S5ii, batterbgrip , TC 1411 and Sigma 150-600, Leica 10x43 BA Jagd and a battery pouch on my belt are all I need or want -and easily portable  even at the current 44 degrees C. Captures everything even night/ spotlight shots and action flawlessly.
