MEC Posted May 31, 2024 Share #1 Posted May 31, 2024 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hey All- Checking in to see if anyone is successfully using a Leica M10R with an Elmar 3.5 50mm collapsible lens. If so, how did you get the lens to detect? Thanks advance, Michael
Advertisement Posted May 31, 2024 Posted May 31, 2024 Hi MEC, Take a look here M10R + Elmar 3.5 50mm collapsible - compatible?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
dpitt Posted June 1, 2024 Share #2 Posted June 1, 2024 Do you have the rare M mount version or do you have the more common LTM version with M adapter? In both cases you really have to make sure to mount/dismount the lens in extended position because it might damage the inside of your camera. Once mounted Leica does not advice to collapse these lenses on any digital M. Although I have done this without harm on my M8 and M9. Do it carefully and only if the lens is in perrfect mechanical order... Otherwise you can use a small rubber band or even a dymo tape on the barrel to make it impossible to collapse fully. Regarding recognizing the lens. Without 6-bit code you can use the M lens profile menu to select a profile manually. There is no 6-bit code or matching lens profile (AFAIK) but you could use the one for the modern Leica Elmar 50mm F2.8 If you have a LTM verson, there are adapters available with empty 6 bit code bits that you can configure yourself with a sharpie. If you have the M mount version, using a sharpie is not permanent and you could contact any technician in your neighborhood to do the 6-bit coding for you. If this is the only non-6 bit code you have, then I would just use the manual selection. Your M will always revert to the last used manual profile when a non coded lens is mounted. Alberti Posted June 2, 2024 Share #3 Posted June 2, 2024 I use the combo. Coded. Though mounting with the lens not wholly extracted means that, as you have the tube in an angle, it will hit the RF wheel. And I don't like that. because the tube is not very stable once unlocked, even collapsing is is something I do with the utmost care. Then the camera fits inside a pocket . . . The lens and combo are very good. Sharp. Well, it's own version. Great natural colours. Some of these designs at that time were offered as apo-lenses. Welcome, dear visitor! There is no 6-bit-code for a 1:3.5/50mm Elmar. The 1:2.8/50mm Elmar-M has its own code, though this is a completely different lens with modern glass and besides the name it hasn't so much in common with an "old" 1:3,5 Elmar. Of course you may use the 1:2.8 Elmar's code either by selecting it from the menu or by coding the lens - if it is an M-mount version. If you use the original screw-mount version, you won't have much chances to code the adapter since the lens needs an adapter with a cutout at the position of the code detector, otherwise the focussing tab will collide with the adapter's rim. When the camera's code detector isn't covered even manual selection of a lens code won't work. (Yes I know, that there are adapters on the market which won't cause these "problems" - don't bother, there are no problems). So just leave lens detection switched off. The results won't show any difference. if you can choose a code with an M-mount version, you might as well choose one for a 50mm Summicron or Summilux or even Noctilux, or a 90mm lens - it won't matter. Thousands of Leica user used this lens without ever thinking of lens detection. The lens is still the same after lens detection was introduced.
MEC Posted June 4, 2024 Author Share #5 Posted June 4, 2024 Thank you for the helpful information. I'm going to use the elmar collapsible on my M6 with the thread mount converter. That lens/body combo is very light to carry and does indeed fit in a pocket. My Barnack does as well, but the M6 is more reliable. The lens on the M10R was difficult to sync up, so most photos I took were blurry. And I don't want to risk damaging the camera sensor. Thanks again. Happy shooting.
