What should I bring for travel to the mediterraen

Hey guys!

In a few days I'll be leaving for Southern Europe. In October I was in Crete, and with the Leica Q (116) I took some of my all time favorite shots from the old town in Crete.

To be honest I'd like to bring my SL2, Q and M240. With the 24-90 lens, summicron-m 50, elmarit-m 21 2.8 and summicron-m 90. Well I am also tempted to bring my K-1. And actually also my tiny Fuji X-T30.

 

But I can't be a madman and travel with 5 cameras.

With the 24-90 and SL2 combo you can get great professional photos that can be cropped and printed in my A2 Canon pro 1000 printer.

The Q is the most sensible camera to bring, it can do it all. 

The M is the most fun camera to use.

Pentax is high quality like the SL2, but I guess it doesn't make sense to bring both. The Pentax K1 is cheaper to replace so I wouldnt worry as much about travelling with it.

The Fuji has better colors than Leica IMO and I use it with Leica and Voigtlander lenses and its tiny. And fun to use.

 

The m lenses are tiny, weigh nothing and portable and I can use them on my SL2 too.

What if I brought the SL2 and 24-90 and the m lens trio (21-50-90) and the Q. Is that also overkill? And too expensive to travel with in case I drop my bag (like the last time)?

I would go for: M240. With summicron-m 50, elmarit-m 21 2.8 and summicron-m 90.

We usually bring the the M10 with 28 - 50 - 75 - 135 and all lenses are used regularly. 28 would be fine for narrow streets, but the 90 will also be fun to capture details in narrow streets.

What exactly is the purpose of your trip? That should dictate what you take in the way of photography equipment. If you take too much you get bogged down vascillating which gear to use. Take too little and you think, "if only I had......". I lived in the Mediterranean for almost 9 months, travelling throughout the vast regions. While it was long ago, I found that the 35mm focal length was most useful. However, looking back I think 28 would have been even better on many occasions. Sometimes though a 75 or 90 is what I wanted to capture detail. I think you definitely need to narrow down what you intend to capture and select the minimal amount of gear necessary to accomplish that goal. Remember you can usually zoom with your feet. I’d bring the SL2 and the Fuji. 
Grab the SL2 when you think you want to print large, grab the fuji for quicker sessions. Bring a mix of L and M lenses. 
Southern Europe is already hot by now. I’ll be in Madrid next week and the forecast is 30º, if you bring too much gear, you’ll regret it.

According to the 'Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy' the most important thing you should take on a trip is a towel.

That said a camera would be fun but lugging a behemoth around can be like having an albatross around your neck, everything you do can become 'geared towards the gear', like how far you can carry it, do you want to take it onto the beach, up a mountain, etc. So for me I'd leave the SL2 at home and think of the Q as my primary camera, you can do wide pano's or crop down to match the zoom lens you would have taken and nobody really cares anyway so long as it's a good photo.

Thanks guys! Haha, you were quite divided though!

I also don't like taking my cameras out in security and putting them in boxed to go through the machine, so maybe I'll just take my Leica Q and an analog camera

Ended up taking my leica q, m240, Olympus mju II analog. And summicron 50, elmarit 21 and summicron 90.

 

In Norway they hand checked every backpack in detail. And all my cameras even the mju with film in were scanned separetly. They even took my cameras so I couldn't see how they handled them. I had to say I'm watching everything you guys do 😂 

The lightweight setup fit well but it was 43c now and almost too hot to be outside without swimming so I didn't use them a lot. Ended up getting sick too.

 

The sl2 and 24-90 would not work for me in this environment. Not a chance.

On my way back the guys in security at the airport in Greece didn't give a s$!t about my cameras and the content of my backpack.
