Bossanovajlg Posted May 23, 2024 Share #1  Posted May 23, 2024 Advertisement (gone after registration) My new Leica M11 P is detecting my older 1:2.8 21MM lens as a 1:1.8 90MM lens. 1) will this impact photos? 2)  why is this occurring? 3) will shutting  off lens detection fix the problem? 4) is this due to it being a older lens?

Do you mean 90/2.8? If so which one if you can identify it?
LeicaR10 Posted May 25, 2024 Share #3 Â Posted May 25, 2024 (edited) Ict, Â Maybe Leica is going to field an updated M 90mm f/1.8 lens with the OP discovering the secret by accident. Â Leica did this once before with a supposed M 14mm lens it never fielded about 8-10 years ago. Â There would be no reason for the menu to display f/1.8....but Ict you would be correct to write it would be a f/2,8 such as a 90 Elmarit-M. Â It could be a typo by the OP too. Â All pure speculation on my part. Â r/ Mark Edited May 25, 2024 by LeicaR10

It's just that i have never seen a 90/1.8 lens at Leica since the thirties and they offer a Summilux 90/1.5, a Summicron 90/2, a Summarit 90/2.4 and a Macro-Elmar 90/4 already so chances to see a new 90/1.8 lens (with which name?) seem somewhat academical. I may be wrong though 😎 Edited May 25, 2024 by lct
LeicaR10 Posted May 25, 2024 Share #5 Â Posted May 25, 2024 Ict, Â Just wild speculation on my part. Â Leica Rumors mentioned the M 90 was due for an update in the past. Â Leica once put a M 14mm in a M camera firmware listing and it was discovered by accident. Â Leica also fielded the 90 Summilux f/1.5 another surprise. Â So...in keeping with speculation and surprises...maybe an updated M 90 will be f/1.8. Â Then again...it might be a typo or Leica elves mischief....LOL. If no, the camera just shows the LAST LENS YOU ENTERED MANUALLY into the menu. Try entering this lens in MANUAL LENS DETECTION menu and then when you switch to AUTO LENS DETECTION it should stay set. Definitely a possibility. But this also could be simply a dirt-filled, grubby screwhead in the location on the lens flange where the 6-bit coding would be. Especially for a 1980s-series lens. They have a flange screw exactly where the single black dot of the f/2.8 90mm Tele-Elmarit-M v.II (thin) code would be, and can "self-identify" as that specific lens, if that screw is darkened enough (dirt, grime, Sharpie pen). Does require that the lens also bring up the 28/90 framelines (which the 21 lenses do). Camera detects "28/90 framelines"Â and "darkness at 6-bit location 000100 " - and bingo. It was a nice "freebie" for anyone using any uncoded 90 from that era - at least the correct focal length would get recorded in EXIF, if the screwhead was dirty enough.
