Big Jim Posted May 12, 2024 Share #1  Posted May 12, 2024 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi, I wanted to ask something about the Leica M3 viewfinder. I’m hoping someone can help. I understand that there were two sizes of viewfinder, later M3s having a slightly larger viewfinder. Do the screw in Leica diopter’s fit both the early and later models ? In other words is the thread size the same ?

Anyway, you may go to Leica dealer with your own M3 to try those 12mm * thread size diopter correction.  * as side note, from M10; the thread size changed to 14mm

The thing is I have an M2 with a diopter which works well for me. I’m thinking of purchasing an M3 but have read that some users find the 50mm lines are not ideal for glasses wearers. In which case I’d like to know I can re-use the diopter I already have. Unfortunately we live a long way from a Leica dealer.
a.noctilux Posted May 13, 2024 Share #4 Â Posted May 13, 2024 I understand. In my use, every film M the diopter size is the same, so you can re-use your M2's correction lens diopter on your future M3. M3's VF is "very" different from M2's. The M3's thick 50 framelines with round edges, always visible can be something good/bad depending on each user. My best bet is to try by oneself.
Pyrogallol Posted May 13, 2024 Share #5 Â Posted May 13, 2024 I have a screw in diopter eyepiece which I used last week on my early 1955 M3, Number 749*** and I have used it on later bodies as well.
Big Jim Posted August 4, 2024 Author Share #6  Posted August 4, 2024 (edited) Hi I wanted to ask about possible different Leica Diopter models. I purchased a second +3 diopter. So I now have 2, one on my M2 one on an M3. I noticed they have slightly different sizes. My original one has a slightly smaller diameter and was coated in rubber that over the years has peeled off. When mounted there is an outer and a raised inner ring on the black plastic. The second isn’t coated, is slightly bigger diameter. It has an inner and outer ring but the inner is recessed. I ask because I have found the second one to be not quite as good as the first. It seems slightly darker and not as sharp especially close up. Were these diopters only made by Leica ? Am I right that there are different models ?
