I certainly had no intention to imply that you had not understood that point, so my apologies if my comments transpired otherwise. Rather, I simply wanted to very clearly make the point that glass compositions are likely to have a much more pronounced effect on color rendition than glass coatings. All of which, of course, is largely irrelevant for black and white shooters 🙂.

No; nt at all. I didn't take your reply that way, Wizard, I assure you. It was good to have further comment stressing this aspect as it is germane to the points being made.

Thanks again!

Philip.

@wizard and @pippy
I am not sure what the technical reason is, but it strikes me that Wizard is speaking of film tests and Philip as well as me are talking about digital sensors. Also, most of my tests have been done on the M8 / M9 with UV/IR filter. Nevertheless, I saw the same differences, not on one sample but on multiple samples and multiple lens types.
(Summicron - Summilux - Elmarit - Elmar)
I cannot remember seeing the cooler variant of Leica lenses in any of my R lenses from the 60s. So, I think this is exclusive to the 50s and early 60s M lenses.

In the last year I was able to use my lenses on a Leica SL as well as a Leica TL2, and the results of the 50s and 60s lenses that I have tested so far are in line with my findings on the M9. On these CMOS sensors I usually do not use the UV/IR filters, but it seems that the influence of this filter on the cooler (more blue) or warmer (more red) difference is minimal.

I have used some of these lenses on film but unfortunately always in B&W. It has been ages since I shot color on film.

Hi all, I came across this thread which has some downloadable samples comparing Summicron 35 KOB and Summilux 35 v2 , as wel as the steel rim reissue.

I think you made an excellent choice with the 35/2 v4. I acquired a very nice late German version, after swapping for the earlier Canadian v4 I had. I have been using it exclusively as my 35 for the past two years. Last October in Wetzlar, I was able to get the proper 6-bit mount for it, and swapped it out in my hotel room while there for the CoP. I had also swapped out the crappy plastic focusing tab for the a nice CNC anodized one from a guy on Etsy earlier.

Over the years I have had experience with several versions of the Leitz/Leica 35 lenses, starting with the 35/1.4 Summilux v2 my dad bought in 1972. I used that lens for years on my M4, M5, M6 with Kodachrome film. I loved it and still have it. It is truly 2 lenses in one. In 1994, I acquired the 35/1.4 ASPH at Photokina, and it became my every day carry for years until getting the v4. To be honest, the ASPH is almost flawless in its rendering for me, but it is bigger and heavier than the v4. Along the way, I had a v1 Summilux, which I foolishly sold years ago. I also have the 35/2.8 Summaron and a Summicron v2 and the first version of the 35 Summicron ASPH, which I never could warm up to for some reason.

These other 35mm lenses all have their individual appeals so I won't get rid of them, but lately, I am always going back to the v4.

I am very happy with the newly acquired 35/2 v4. The ergonomics are a massive plus. Really. I got back from a short vacation and used this lens almost exclusively. I am very happy with it and can highly recommend it.

derleicaman - may I ask approximately what the 6-bit mount cost?
