jplomley Posted May 2, 2024 Share #1 Posted May 2, 2024 Advertisement (gone after registration) Quick reach-out before I purchase several ND and CPL-Dark filters from BT-Photography....does the knurled ring interfere with getting the lens hoods on and off for the 21, 35 and 75 APO Summicrons? Many thanks in advance.
Advertisement Posted May 2, 2024 Posted May 2, 2024 Hi jplomley, Take a look here Breakthrough ND Filters and APO Summicrons -Do they Fit?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Dr. G Posted May 2, 2024 Share #2 Posted May 2, 2024 I can check when I get home. All my filters are Breakthrough. I'm pretty sure it's no issue on the APO lenses, but I don't have the dark CPL. Interestingly enough, on my Summilux-SL the regular CPL is fine but I can't get the hood on or off with the dark CPL in place.
LeicaR10 Posted May 3, 2024 Share #3 Posted May 3, 2024 (edited) Jplomley, The answer for the Breakthrough Photography ND and CPL-Dark filters is; Yes. The newest version of the filter rings X4 were redesigned and work with the hoods on. This is what I use on my SL APO and zooms. Superb filters, color neutral and best I have found to date. r/ Mark PS The newest versions of the CP-ND filters have color coded inner rings; red, green as posted on the BT site. Hi - this new re-design - is that for the M-lenses with hoods as well? I have the Summicron ASPH v2 (hood with a vent on the top left side) - and wondering if the 39mm x4 would fit that ) - the site doesn't provide dimensions and their customer support didn't know and didn't get back even though they took down my details. I'm very keen to try these but hesitating because of the hood (I'm not in the US so international returns are cumbersome and something I'd like to avoid). Would be great if you have any direct experience in this regard. Thanks
LeicaR10 Posted September 27, 2024 Share #5 Posted September 27, 2024 HNK, You wrote a good question about the hood fitting. I don't have that lens and can't say. I use the Breakthrough filters on the SL lenses with the hoods slipping over the filter. I do use the filters on some M lenses and those have not been an issue. Personally, I rarely use hoods except in very bright light conditions and shooting at an angle that might cause excessive light striking the front element. You might try one BT filter and see if it works. If it doesn't you can return it. Just be sure to order the latest X4 filter as the dimension of the rings were reduced to fit the Leica M lenses. r/ Mark
HNK Posted October 12, 2024 Share #6 Posted October 12, 2024 An update on the topic of Breakthrough filters fitting the Summicron-M 35mm ASPH II with the lens-hoods screwed on: I got in touch with Leica store Miami to check before ordering one - and Josh Lehrer kindly explained that the 39mm and 46mm Breakthrough filters *do not* work with the M-lenses that have screw on hoods if the hoods are attached. The Leica filters would, of course, fit just fine. After doing a bit more research I ended up with the T-Pro B+W filters, which fit just fine with the hood (I was considering the Master range, esp since the color would match the lens, but felt that T-Pro being thinner has a bit less risk. Images below to show how the filter fits with the hood screwed on. Welcome, dear visitor! I tried the breakthrough filter and the knurling is wider than the lens barrel and prevents the shade from attaching on my Tri -Elmar . The Leica filter is level with the lens barrel but a small ridge in the shade still prevents it from fitting. This is with the 12592 shade. That B+W looks like its outer circumference is slightly smaller
