HI

I have just purchased for my Leica SL Typ 601 the multi functional hand grip that holds an extra battery !
Do you know if the battery in the grip will kick in and power the camera when the battery in the camera body dies !
When i have the grip with the spare battery attached to the camera there still only appears to be one battery icon !

Surely this grip is NOT just a device to carry a spare battery that you have to take out of the grip and put in the camera body when needed.
I realise that of course this grip is very useful for shooting portraits being able to control your settings from the grip !

I am hoping I am doing something really stupid and somehow not activating the second battery when it is attached to the camera.
Please tell me that this grip is NOT just an expensive way of carring a spare battery !

No. You'll be fine. Haven't used my Leica grips in a while but I think it uses the grip battery first. Then the camera. Can't remember about the icons. Make sure the rubber grommet on the bottom of the camera is removed when using the grip.

exactly! When both batteries are present all SL models will use the one inside the grip. And in every case you need the one in the camera.

and: via USB we can charge both batteries with SL3, SL2 only internal battery, 601 nothing...

Double-check that the grip is attached to the body properly, and perhaps re-attach it to make sure. Both batts should show up on the display. The camera will draw down the grip batt first, then the in-camera batt.

I was told the SL3 grip has been improved

My biggest complaint about the SL2 grip was that the internal battery was often going down before the extra battery, and to change it I had to remove everything.

I was only using it because of the battery issues of the SL2 where some lenses consumed more power and would impose limitations on photo and video.

I have the same problem with the grip on the SL2-S - it draws down the grip batt to about two bars, and then starts on the in-camera batt and draws them both down at the same time. I've reported/complained to Leica about it, and presume its a firmware problem. The grip for the SL behaves normally (exhausts the grip batt first) though.
