Mo Elsaghir Posted April 9, 2024 Share #1 Posted April 9, 2024 Advertisement (gone after registration) I have Leica CL and SL "601" bodies. Most of my lens are TL crop sensor. I sometimes use them on the SL body with pleasing results. I was wondering if I upgrade the SL to SL2 would 24mp results from the SL2 be better than out of the SL? jaapv Posted April 9, 2024 Share #2 Posted April 9, 2024 Debatable. More MP does not necessarily translate into better images. But

tomasis7 Posted April 9, 2024 Share #4 Posted April 9, 2024 not sure if you do that for just the TL lens. A lot of things you appreciate SL2 for like the IBIS sensor and other stuff. For example, I like video stuff and the TL zoom lens for the compactness. I would be compelled to upgrade for IBIS but for everything else, Id keep the 601. I have a 6mpx camera and I find it enough. Will you print a poster of billiard table size, you could use AI upsizing lol.
Mo Elsaghir Posted April 10, 2024 Author Share #5 Posted April 10, 2024 Thanks very much everybody for the help. As I have almost all the focal length primes for the cl , it would be nice to use them on the SL with 10mp and pictures looks very good ! my question if I use the tl lens on SL2 would my pictures with 24mp improve ? Thanks

Thanks As far as I know you are getting 20mp with the SL2, not 24, and 26mp with the SL3, both provide IBIS. It may not be important to you, though, as you seem to be satisfied with the original SL 601. I recently purchased a used SL2 body and tested it with some of my TL lenses (TL 60 mm macro and 11-23 TL) - the high ISO noise (5000 and 6400 ISO tested) was so bad that the SL2 went back to the seller. It now sits on the shelf and nobody seems to want it. My advice - the SL2 is a heavy beast, even if a relatively heavy lens like the TL 35-155 zoom feels well-balanced on it, and even if you are using it in good light, the original CL body still works best with TL lenses in my opinion. Why give away the superior resolution on a CL body? And why pay for a SL3 to get 26mp- if you manage to get one, that is?
Mo Elsaghir Posted April 10, 2024 Author Share #7 Posted April 10, 2024 Advertisement (gone after registration) Thanks, I have no intention of giving away the CL, I am keeping it as light body as well as the SL but I was wondering about using the TL lenses on the SL 2 if it is better image quality than on the original SL. I think the double resolution of the SL2 can be beneficial over the 601, but it would be the same as using the CL in the first place. the CL has some lenses that are not available on the SL line from Leica, like the 60 macro and 35 1.4. AI is good for noise reduction, but upscaling always has problems, I am sure with time it will get better.
Mo Elsaghir Posted April 10, 2024 Author Share #10 Posted April 10, 2024 Thanks, so it looks like the lower MP does not affect the picture quality ? in other word I should be okay to have the CL and SL bodies on short holiday with just the TL lens

That's only a problem if you want to print big. The SL manual says that APS-C resolution is 3936 x 2624. That should print well on A3 (roughly 12x16 inch), with the usual caveats: focus, exposure, content, etc. Using the "full" 24MP resolution would let you go up a size, so A2 or 16x24 inch. It's not enough of a difference to change your vacation plans. Use the CL if you think you might want to print large, otherwise pick whichever one you enjoy the most. Mo Elsaghir Posted April 10, 2024 Author Share #12 Posted April 10, 2024 Thank you all, I have no intention of printing A2 size. Happy with the answers.
jaapv Posted April 11, 2024 Share #13 Posted April 11, 2024 And if you have to crop: Gigapixel works well to increase resolution, Adobe Enhance does a decent job as well.
