ALScott Posted April 8, 2024 Share #1 Posted April 8, 2024 Advertisement (gone after registration) New to Q3 and Leica so learning. Whenever I am using the EVF and half press to focus it appears oof even though focus is locked in (green). Is that normal? The shot will be in focus when reviewed but does not appear so at all in the EVF.
Advertisement Posted April 8, 2024 Posted April 8, 2024 Hi ALScott, Take a look here Q3 EVF out of focus. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!

ALScott Posted April 11, 2024 Author Share #5 Posted April 11, 2024 Spent some time with it and the EVF only appears OOF on half press in AFc and iAF modes. It remains clear in AFs mode. I guess it's just a function of how the camera works because in AFc and iAF I can hear the autofocus drives constantly working and focus point doesn't change but EVF image is not as sharp. In AFs it locks focus and is silent, which I would expect, and EVF is sharper. The only other EVF I have had is C-lux and an old Sony RX100 so it's probably more to do with me not being used to using them.
LocalHero1953 Posted April 11, 2024 Share #6 Posted April 11, 2024 (edited) Isn't this a matter of the EVF refresh setting? I think the EVF is dropping the res (so looks OOF) to minimise processing. I don't have the Q3 (just Q2), but I'm sure I've read this can be cured by changing the refresh from 120Hz to 60Hz (or something similar). Mostly use back of the other point and shoots. Back to the manual to see.
ALScott Posted April 11, 2024 Author Share #8 Posted April 11, 2024 120hz made it much worse to my eyes. Brightened the EVF and played with diopter more and that helped. It still is fuzzier in AFc/iAF when focus is active that when just looking through the EVF.
Le Chef Posted April 11, 2024 Share #9 Posted April 11, 2024 120hz is frankly not worth the effort to switch to it. I also think that iAF is computerized nonsense that spends more time dithering in indecision than being of any real use. If you insist on using iAF I would switch it off and wait for Leica to upgrade the firmware so it works.

With the Q3 use AF-S. If you really need AF-C buy a Sony!

I have no complaints.

Many mirroless cameras reduce EVF resolution and/or flicker while focusing. With AF-S the focusing duration is short and the flicker is not noticeable. With AF-C, focusing last longer and the change in EVF is noticeable.

That makes me not worry that it's an issue with the camera.

When in iAF EVF goes OOF when it locks on.. photos are ok. In AF-S all fine EVF stays sharp in focus when camera locks on .. Maybe a firmware update will fix this one day
Le Chef Posted April 20, 2024 Share #16 Posted April 20, 2024 If you want to enjoy your photography with the Q3 I would start by switching off iAF.
aldenc Posted June 6, 2024 Share #17 Posted June 6, 2024 Straight out of box, on iAF had the fuzzy look in the EVF. Spent ages adjusting diopter but seemed not to make a difference. Then thanks to this thread I switched to AFs and EVF is clearly focussed. Agree that for a £5,000 Leica this is poor.
ALScott Posted June 7, 2024 Author Share #18 Posted June 7, 2024 I think for me this is more a result of never using an EVF before. Whether it's that or not I have now gotten used to it. Sometimes it seems more noticeable than others. I got an SL3 and it's the same also. Bottom line it's less and less of a factor with either camera the more I use them. Hope you have the same. jul7 Posted June 7, 2024 Share #19 Posted June 7, 2024 Hi, same issue on my side. So I only used AF-S to avoid that... I can confirm that there is no "EVF issue" in AF-C with other brand like Nikon or Sony...
