The baby horse (8 days old) was in the shadows and I couldn’t get closer as the mother likes to bite. I lifted the shadows, which on the 2s wouldn’t be a problem, but on the 2 it is struggling. Olaf_ZG Posted April 2, 2024 Share #23 Posted April 2, 2024 I tend to give prints away, so just for fun, I printed this baby horse image on 15x22cm. One as edited normally and one with LR enhanced denoise. Must say, the non-enhanced was much more pleasing to me, and noise looks worse on screen than on (small) prints. The horse lovers really loved the image. No one complained about the quality of pixels. I guess we are too big pixelpeepers on this forum. That said, I am glad I have now both the 2 and 2s, a great combo and prices are stellar.

This is a gear oriented forum, of course, but we can sometimes place too much importance on the technology, pixel peeping, and not enough on the photography itself. Your shot just makes me want to concentrate on, and appreciate, the light, the subject and the composition. Nice one 👍 2

I switched to 2S from 2 and have no regrets as I really hate any editing other than a bit of cropping and shadow lifting The idea of denoising etc just isn't on my radar at all
algrove Posted April 3, 2024 Share #26 Posted April 3, 2024 Lenses-I own many APO SL lenses, but the 24-90 is IMHO almost an APO quality lens. You have many lens choices where I have tried the Panasonic 70-200 f4 with internal zooming. It takes a 1.4x. Keep in mind with the SL2S one can use the multi-shot mode and still get a 96MP image if on tripod. As you might know the camera takes the captures and then combines them into one DNG and also gives you a regular 24MP image just in case you had camera movement with the multi-shot. Incredibly useful feature for me. I currently have 3 SL2S and will be selling one regular and 2 Reporter models once my SL3 offers multi-shot mode even though the Reporter models have had limited use and were purchased less than one year ago. PM me if you want.

I have the 2S but with good prices now on used, wondering if a 2 would be complimentary. Thanks.

While somewhat off-topic, I want to emphasise that texture (noise/grain) helps tremendously to bring a print alive. We always had it with film. Somewhere on the journey, this wisdom got lost and now we have dozens of denoising software offers as if texture on a digital image is a deadly plague. Just make sure that the noise/texture looks good and embrace it. BTW, the SL2-S exhibits particularly pleading texture between ISO 800 and 1600.

So instead of the 3, I bought the 2 and a demo 90-280. The 2s is really great with low light and when I need 1/1000 (horse riding). I use the 2 for controlled light (flash) and portraits with the lux (might need to crop). Handling is the same which leaves me less to think about settings so I can focus on what to capture. Really happy with this combo.

Interesting you say this as photographers we often concentrating too much on the small differences, such as MP, cameras, lenses, processing, etc. whereas the "public" who views our prints either likes the composition/subject matter, or whatever and never asks what camera you used nor especially not how did you processed the image. They either like it or walk away.
BLeventhal Posted April 10, 2024 Author Share #32 Posted April 10, 2024 I am leaning towards the SL2-S as I appreciate the ability to pull shadows more than resolution. As I said, I have a Z9 and Z8, both of which have 47MP. I'm not sure how the Leica would fit in my workflow, but absolutely love the design of their SL bodies... The camera would be used to compliment what I already use. bruce
