HI guys,

I can't decide what to choose and why.

So I ask your comments to these two lenses, and if you can some shots to compare.

I tried a 50lux (latest pre-asph) with built-in telescopic hood, and I could almost fall in love with it, little, sharp, lovely bokeh, but i can't try the 50lux ASPH (actual version), what do you think about?

p.s.

the 50lux pre-asp remind me of the Nocti, am i mad?:)

regards

Maurizio

I think most people will tell you that the ASPH is better, but my preference is the pre-ASP. With the latter you'll never the get the headache-inducing bokeh that you see in the first picture in the following thread:

And here's one of my pictures with the pre-ASPH:

I also prefer the pre-ASPH to the Noctilux.

Thanks Mitch,

and thanks for this picture too! really fantastic moment and mood!

thanks for sharing.

a question:

what about weight?

is the pre-asph lighter or heavier than current version?

did you compare them?or could you manage these lenses?

regards

Another vote for the Pre-asph, it's the 50 I use all the time. The Asph is sharper wide open --- in fact the 50 Lux Asph may the sharpest lens I've ever used period. But there is something special about the way the 50 pre-Lux paints that I just love...

Pre-Lux at f2.8, ISO 640 (click for the large version):

While the 50 preASPH can not match the resolution of the 50 ASPH wide open it's no slouch. It is by any standard an excellent performing lens and has a beautiful signature. Of the ASPH lenses I think only the 35/1.4 ASPH and the 28/2 ASPH manage to balance high resolution with a smoother tonality and softer OOF areas. This is all very subjective and some like the vibrating bokeh of the current 50.

Personally my favorite of all the current Leica line up is the 35 Summilux and if Leica came out with a full frame camera I'd continue to use the 35 as my 50 and just crop the image to get the field of view -I like it that much.

Here are some samples that show the bokeh of the 50/1.4 preASPH fairly clearly. Maybe someone has some shots wide open from the 50 ASPH.

WOW!

really nice pictures guys!

they make me more uncertain about....

For what that concerns code, i think this model should be codable....

isn't it?

another question:

is one of the couple bigger?if so, which one?

thanks a lot guys, and please share some more... i love these lenses more and more,

but i love your shots even more...

even with the crop factor, these lens (or maybe it's up to you) remind me of the "real" RF leica photography.... Dunno why.... but this is what i guess.

Maurizio

I can;t comment on the 50 asph as I have never owned one but the 50 pre asph is my favorite drawing lens on the M8. I acknowledge that the asph is sharper both in center and to the corners so if that is your priority go for that one. But the pre-asph draws with the old Leica magic and produces very unique images. However I would not go so far as to compare it to the Nocti. I am one of those who doesn't find the OOF areas of the Nocti to be wonderful and I certainly do for the 50 pre asph.

YMMV

Oh, and one more really important point! The Pre-Asph version you want is the one you show a picture of, the one with the built-in sliding hood. The older versions with clip-on hoods only focus to 1 meter while the newer one with the built-in hood focuses to .7 meter. Doesn't sound like much, but makes a difference on many subjects...

50 Lux ASPH wide open. It's a fantastic lens, mine will be even better when I get the backfocus fixed.

I've never used the pre-asph, however I really dislike the older sliding hoods which don't lock into place, not sure if that's the case with the pre-asph, it was with my 50 'cron. (the asph hood 'locks' with a slight turn).

I love my 50mm Pre-Asph. It's my candid portrait lens.

Finally found some images from the Leica Porsche trip to Germany in June. These are from Heidelburg. Shot at 5.6 so the lens boke is not well shown.

I've owned both and traded in the pre ASPH for the current 50 ASPH Lux. The current model 50 mm Lux ASPH is my favorite M8 lens by a long shot. You really should hold out for the ASPH version. This lens, with its floating element, gives you great results without any stopping down. Its a superb M8 portrait lens. Check out some of the stuff taken with it on the photo forum.

Hi Doug,

what about dimensions and weight?

Or machanical tech? Do they built 'em with the same quality?did you find a fault in one of those?

Hi David, really nice picture?

just a question, was this the colour of your son's jacket, or did you just get off the uv/ir?

And in that case, any focussin issue without it at FA?

thanks a lot

No, what we're looking at is the famous magenta cast. That's a uniformly black jacket. Also note that the green vegetation is not rendered quite right either. This is how outdoor photos look without the UV/IR filter. Sometimes the IR problems seem to be even more apparent in shadowed settings than they are in direct sunlight.

This was shot back in July while my UV/IR filters were on a slow boat from Europe.
