johnastovall Posted November 29, 2007 Share #1 Posted November 29, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) I shot a piece today for a regional magazine on world famous Texas Saddle maker Wendy Allen. Here she is showing the passion she has as she talks about her craft. (Yes, that is her hair color, not the Leica.) I plan to go back an do an extend folio on her making a saddle but the rest of today's shooting was with a Canon 5D and lights (I hate lights). I told her for the saddle making project that I would only bring the little camera and no lights. This was the M8, CV 50/1.5 f/2.8 ISO640. The other camera and stuff just made it so formal. The M8 is the tool for a long term documentary project of one of her saddles.

robert_parker Posted November 29, 2007 Share #2 Posted November 29, 2007 Interesting use of colour and depth of field
earleygallery Posted November 29, 2007 Share #3 Posted November 29, 2007 You're sure the hair colour isn't down to the IR filter? Lovely 3D quality to this shot. It really pops out on my monitor.
imported_peter_m Posted November 29, 2007 Share #4 Posted November 29, 2007 Nice portrait John, it pops. I am not so sure about the background, might have been more complementary to have her in front of the bench with the tools in the background. Rather interesting hair.... I sure wouldn't get away with that unless I glue my hat down Would love to see more of the project. Peter
stuny Posted November 29, 2007 Share #5 Posted November 29, 2007 John - Among your best. Excellent color, detail, light and selective focus. You susually ee hair like that on people who crave to be shouting "Look at me!"

Peter I did a bunch with her in front of the bench with tools and a partially finished saddle but those were being directed by the person from the magazine and involved the 5D and lights. I just shot off a few with the Leica when we got there and were making introductions just to get some candids. Also Wendy, very much plays to a camera as I learned when I got set up. Lovely 3D quality to this shot. It really pops out on my monitor. I've found the CV Nokton 50/1.5 really does get a lot of pop to it's images. You nail the focus and it pops it out from the background. 2.8-4 seems to be a really sweet spot for it.
