I hope - and think - you are happy with the Sigma 500; I am still waiting for a serviced/new lens as my was off spec out of the box (it will be fixed, so no problem). The best there is in plentiful light and at low ISO (according to my eyes).

Hi Helge - Just curious, having acquired the Sigma, have you sold the Canon 400mm f4? I look forward seeing images & hearing your views on the lens. The Sigma will have to be really good to make me part with the Canon.... To answer your question, it's a female Elephant, their heads are angular shaped, males have a more rounded forehead. Best, Mike

I will sell it because subjectively the Sigma has better sharpness and at least the same IQ than the Canon 400 DO with a 1.4TC (which is 500 vs 560mm at f5.6). In addition, it is significantly lighter and easier to handle. I love this lens! The elephant is a female 😉 1

To answer your question, it's a female Elephant, their heads are angular shaped, males have a more rounded forehead. Best, Mike Hi Mike, Yes, I have sold the Canon 400mm f4 DO v2. I have also sold Canon RF100-500 and Canon RF 70-200 - together with Canon R5 - as I want to limit myself to the L-system (there are limits to how many systems I can use with some regularity; being a non-professional photographer). I am very happy with Sigma DG DN 70-200 (Leica SL90-280 is on the heavy side for me); and the thinking was/is that Sigma DG DN 500mm will substitute the Canon 400mm. Whether the Sigma 500 is up to Canon 400 when it comes to resolution and sharpness is an open question; but I hope it is sufficiently close for my use of long lens(es). Time will tell - but first I need to get that Sigma 500 lens in house... The Sigma is, however, very attractive from a size/weight-perspective, which is a very convenient factor for my use. And thanks for guiding me on Elephant gender; there are limited number of Elephants where I live, and those living here (in caption) should definitely live on another continent... Looking forward seeing more photos with the Sigma 500! 2

The elephant is a female 😉 Good to hear that you are (highly) satisfied with the Sigma 500 - something that your photos clearly show. In L-mount, Sigma 500 opens an avenue for those subjects inclined to longer focal lengths, captured by a relatively light-weight system. With forthcoming FW updates, SL3 will likely get a more reliable cAF (sAF is plenty good, as it has been on all SLx-bodies), and with the next generation of Panasonic bodies, possibly a SL3-S as well, cAF should further improve. This is good for those into the L-system, and for ‘newcomers’ to the system. Keep images coming! Edited April 10, 2024 by helged

Looking forward seeing more photos with the Sigma 500! I’m in a similar situation as I too have sold much of my Canon gear. Like you I sold 70-200; 100-500; and the R3. For now I have decided to keep the R5 and RF 600 f/4. I am very interested in the Sigma 500 f/5.6 and think it would make an excellent safari lens considering its reach , size, and weight.

I highly recommend Sean Reid‘s SL3 Studio Test to assess color differences to SL2. I have an M-E and two copies of the 50 Summilux-M ASPH but the waiting period for the SL3 is about two months and I just put myself on the list. To my eyes WB and colors come closer to the S3 just not as saturated and contrasty. Rendering with the 75 Noctilux is a step-up from FF but not where the S3 is.

Two month later the lake will look like any other lake and at the end of summer probably gone as an existing lake.... The color rendering seems to be different to the SL-2 - my workflow has changed ....
