The 200th year anniversary of the birth of passenger railways in the world was celebrated over the weekend of 27-28 September 2025 in County Durham, England. The Stockton and Darlington Railway, the first passenger train carried passengers for the first time, as well as coal from the collieries in south west Durham, to a port at Stockton on Tees. The train was hauled by Locomotion No 1 designed and built in Newcastle upon Tyne by Robert Stephenson, the son of George Stephenson, known as the father of the railways. This anniversary train pulled by a replica of Locomotion, set off from Shildon to travel a similar route as its predecessor via Darlington to Stockton on Tees.

These few photographs were taken with a SL3. the first 2 with a 90-280 and the others with a 24-90 at 90mm on Sunday 28th September last. The raw files were processed in Lightroom. Some passengers wearing dayglo orange coats were removed!  Generative AI is very powerful!

There are 12 images in 4 groups. Here is batch 1.

and finally S&D 200 batch 4

These photographs were taken after the final celebrations as the replica Locomotion No 1 and train made its way north at about 10mph to a facility where it could be lifted onto a low road trailer to be driven back to a museum.
