Very nice!
What Lens did you use?

Chris

Hi there,

Was your question directed at me?

If so, thanks, it was the 24-70 II by Sigma.

I tend to take 3 Sigma zooms when I know I am going to be roughing it a little or in harsh weather. I have broken a few lenses and cameras over the years and I prefer not to break one of my APO primes.

Yes, i was asking you as i have a 14mm 1.8 Sigma what should be perfect for night sky photography.
I believe that at least the ART series by Sigma is very, very near to Leica lenses what makes the decision to pay 2-5 times more for e Leica lens not very difficult.

Yes your Sigma ART 1.8 will be super for night photography, just watch your foreground as even at 14mm you will see a shallow depth of field if you are close to your foreground. If you arent F1.8 will give sharp results across the frame.

So Leica have the 14-24 Zoom at F2.8 and the 21mm APO at F2 that I would consider really good Astro / Milkway (in the landscape sense) lenses. The 21 APO is absolutely incredible. By far the best wide in L mount, there is no competition. I am stunned by the quality wide open, but yes it is expensive.

I have the Sigma 14mm F1.4 but didnt take it on this trip, but I will soon be going to Lofoten with a large emphasis on night photography so will be a main stay there.

I always find the best night images are those that combine a good landscape, and a nice striking night sky, so just go careful with 14mm, as it really shrinks your subject and forces the sky to become the subject, this is where I would try hard to incorporate a nice foreground if possible so its not just a sky.

Thanks so much JTLeica!
When i am back in Sardinia i will start to do some tries, if something presentable comes out i will post it here.
i probably should have paid the extra price for the 1.4 instead the 1.8, however it is one of my most used lens.

Have you seen the size of the 1.4? It may put you off. That said its quite amazing, its almost perfect optically from F1.4.

No, but i guess it's bigger and heavier than my 1.8 what is on/over the limit for a everyday lens.
The 1.8 is surprisingly almost perfect as well from open to closed, i made several tests and could not find substantial differences.
I used to shot a lot with the Sigma 15mm diagonal Fisheye what is tiny and light, but optical quality on my Nikon D800 was not really great.
But i am thinking about to buy a Nikon to Leica adapter to do some tests with my expensive Nikon lenses.

it is you in the photo? or do you have someone get into frame?

Yep that is me, I had it on a tripod all framed up and my friend and fellow photographer pressed the shutter, you can also just put it on an interval timer or use the fotos app if within range.
